Stress Strain relationship?

In general does every stress produce a strain? and vice versa every strain produce a stress?

If my strain tensor has a 0 element, does the corresponding stress tensor have a 0 in the same element location?

    NO,

the most famous example for this matter is Rolling in Metallurgy. In rolling, strain is existed in one dimension, but stress tensor has 9 element. it means 3 dimensional stress. 1- stress vertical to rolling sheet, 2- stress that is caused by friction in rolling sheet, vertical to rolling direction, 3-stress that is caused by friction in rolling sheet in same rolling direction. but there is strain only in rolling direction. (sorry for bad English)

stress produces strain. Strain is a result of stress. not the other way around.

its like going to a test and saying man I am so stressed. no-one can see how stressed you are but they can see the strain on your facial expressions and how bad your hair is and stuff like that.
