HELP!!! How do you keep a dog from running away?
Ok so we adopted a dog from the shelter last week. A 2 year old aussie mix, we already have 2 aussies 3 and 5 1/2 male and female. But anyways the new guy has run off twice now... Any suggestions? our dogs stay on the property so this is a big problem!
Ok so my male is set to get neutered in November and our female has been fixed for a year or almost two. We live on nearly 3 acres and we have a back yard fenced off but he could get out if he wanted to. I know because our female can get out and she is the widest out of the three. I am going to look into electric fencing but I know it does take time for him to figure out this is his home. I just hope he does soon. My hubby was parked and he hopped out the window and took off, he was caught about a mile and a half away by my winded hubby :x Our new dog and him are still trying to find each others place. There is a bit of growling from them both and suggestions for this as well???

Give him time to figure out your place is home. Keep him on a leash until then. Years ago we moved and for about the first month if our dog got outside she would run and return to our old house which was only a few blocks away thank goodness. Scared the crap out of us the first time because she was not a runner and had never tried to get out of the yard before that.

It totally is dependent upon what type of puppy you will have. For instance, if in case you have a greyhound or one more top-velocity puppy, you NEED a fenced in in backyard with a REAL fence. If you will have a slower of lazy puppy that does NOT run so much anymore (An ancient puppy) you would use an invisible fence, nevertheless, it may be lovely steeply-priced, hence, have your puppy on a leash at ALL instances with it's external. Or no less than till you train it that it can't move out aspect of the limitations of your backyard.

CHOP OFF THEIR LEGS!!!!!
No, I'm only kidding. That would be horrible. Try looking into electric fences (With dog collars that keep the dog from going out).

Use a LEASH or a FENCE
This is a rescued dog.. you only had him a week.. it takes a LONG time to train a dog off leash.. and some dogs NEVER get it!

1) have your pets micro-chiped as soon as possible.
2) 6 ft or higher privacy fencing.
3) have them spayed or neutered.
4) electric fencing.

keep the new one penned up but still within smelling and sight distance of the others, allow them time to be acquainted.
question: are they all fixed? i assume the shelter dog is but what about the others?

Install fences or you can always buy a dog door.
A dog door is like a door you can put on
your house door so that they would not go out.
try using the rope and attach it to the neck of
the dogs and tie it to somewhere so they will
not go out.
