Help. Need advice with vegetables.?

I know it's very early but this christmas I'm getting organised and so I know what everyone is getting. I'm doing a hamper of vegetable gardening related stuff as a present but I have no idea about any form of gardening. I'm thinking some seeds or whatever it is vegetables grow from, and maybe some tools. Anybody have any ideas??

    Hi there,

What a lovely thought for the gardeners you know. As for the seeds, well you could go to ebay and buy from there. Most are reasonably priced and the sellers will answer your questions etc. I'm sure you would be able to pick up trowel and fork sets, watering cans, netting, fleece, plant pots, plant labels, and all the other bits and bobs that you may want to add to your hampers.

Good seeds to grow would be:

    chillies

    peppers

    tomatoes - hanging or cherry

    sweetcorn - normal and/or mini

    peas

    broad beans

    dwarf beans

    turnip

    carrots

    courgettes

    beetroots

    mixed salad leaves

    corn salad

    lettuce

    spring onions

    radish

    cabbage

    kale

    cauliflower

    brussels sprouts

    melon - most types

    cucumber

    celery

    mushroom kits

    Don't forget herbs:

basil - there's loads of different types

mint - again many different types

    borage - tastes like cucmber

    thyme

    oregano

    sage

    tarragon

    rosemary

    dill

Also include some sweet smelling/wild flowers to encourage beneficial insects for pollination:

    sweet peas

wild flower mixes (flower only no grass)

    meadowsweet

    nicotiana

    daisies

I have included a link to ebay for seeds and such - have a mooch, it should give you some ideas on what to buy.

Hope this helps in some way. Hope whoever receives your lovely gift enjoys it - I know I would if my family purchased any of the above for me. Best wishes to you and have a lovely christmas :-)

    Hi,

Your Christmas idea is great and will be the best gift a gardener can receive!! Definitely include some hand held tools.

As for seeds, the varities will depend on the region you (or the gardener) live in, but there are tomato varieties suited to pretty much any climate other than the South Pole. Tomatoes from seed are a bit difficult to get past the seedling stage, but once they are taller than a couple of inches, they will usually survive to produce loads of tomatoes.

The fastest germinating garden plant is the radish (a few days), so include a package of those seeds because it is fun (for a gardener at least) to see some results quickly and early in the season.

Zucchini is extremely easy to grow so include those as well.

Bush beans are early and prolific and survive just about any abuse (drought, heat, cold) so include those. And definitely Scarlet Runner beans which are a climbing variety that blossom and produce the entire season up until hard frost. The individual; pods will grow to about 12" long and the blossoms will attract humming birds.

As an added bonus, include a Soil Test Kit (about $10.00). Any gardener will thank you for this!!

    Have fun,

    Ray

What about one of those little hand watering cans.

And maybe pick up some leaflets from your local garden centre and put them in. And if you can afford it a little book each on gardening/growing vegetables. What about one little plant pot each too? Maybe if you're up to it, buy a terracotta plant pot and paint them individually yourself to add that personalised touch!

How about a pair of gardening gloves each too?

If you go to your local garden centre, the seed packets should tell you what they grow into. I think tomatoes and apples are probably the easiest fruit and vegetables to grow for a novice!
