What are my chances at Amherst?
Alright here's the low down:
I'm a senior from Los Angeles
My GPA is 4.159 weighted, and i'm 26th in my class of 205 (it's a really competitive high school, but i'm disapointed with my rank..i hope it doesn't effect my application too much)
the better of my SAT scores is 2180
I have pretty decent extra carriculars: my dad runs a non-profit art gallery and i've been volunteering with him for a long time. i'm also varsity volleyball captain, and i'm associated with various clubs.
additionally i think i can write a damn good essay
I'm also considering applying early decision.
honestly, what do you think my chances are?
that GPA is my lausd GPA. it includes grades i got in the 7th grade. i'm not sure which GPA amherst looks at, but i know my UC GPA is significantly higher, a 4.39
also, the 15th ranked student in my class is only 0.043 ahead of me
but yeah, i accept that my GPA isn't the best

Your odds go up with early decision, but there are a reasons amherst may reject you unfortunately. Don't take offense to this, they may see something great in you and take you. Your SATs are good enough, but your GPA and class rank are sub-par for amherst. You are outside of the top 10% of your class, and most Amherst students are probably within the top 5% of their class, even when they come from competitive schools. You also don't seem to show focus or passion for anything. Schools like to see that you can focus in a certain area, be passionate about it, and pursue your passions. Usually people who pursue passions are more active and contribute more to a college and also are more successful and have the ability to donate later on. Unfortunately that is lacking, BUT if you can tie all of your activities together in your essay and relate it to a passion, you stand a good chance of being accepted. I would say your odds of getting in are no better than the average applicant to Amherst, but you've got a shot.
