...instead of basking in the gentle love, acceptance and tolerance that Jesus spent so much time on?

It all boils down to sin and control. Legalism is a way to control the flock by instructing them on what does and does not please "the Lord".

Jesus said, "sin no more".
Pretty simple actually. You must know sin to understand this lesson. You must learn the lesson, to follow Jesus in "the Way, the Truth, and the Life".

You mean like the "do not murder" rule? How much basking would you like people to do if violent street gangs were terrorizing your neighborhood and threatening your family?

It's easier to look at other people's sins and condemn them than read the Bible, look for your own sins and change yourself.
