Question about the rock band Nirvana?
I know that Soundgarden's Superknown is supposed to be the essential grunge album and I know that lots of you like Nirvana's Bleach better than In Utero, but I want to hear reasons why the first two songs off In Utero: Serve the Servants and Scentless Apprentice are NOT the two greatest songs of the entire punk era. I don't care if you agree with me or not; I just want to know if and why I'm wrong. The very first time I heard them I just knew they were classics. 10 points to the best argument!!
I am reading your answers and thanks to everybody. Billy I didn't know grunge and punk are different genres. Thanks for straightening me out!!

Grunge is just a label for the "punk" rock emmanating from the Olympia and Seattle art social scenes of the late 80s and early 90s. It is still punk rock and grunge is nothing more than a label; it isn't a genre. In Utero is by far Nirvana's best album and, I agree that Scentless Apprentice is an incredible song. Serve the Servants? Uhh...not quite so much. Just about every other track on In Utero is better!

...well, I cant disagree... In Utero is Nirvana's best album... Nirvana is an Alternative band, Grunge was just a label used for the are which the music came from, and then they also used it for bands that sounded like that, (Example: Bush from the UK)... I'm most likely not going to get the ten points... because I agree that Scentless Apprentice and Serve the Servants are two of the best songs ever, but the greatest songs of the Punk/Alternative era? no, Spank Thru, is the best song ever in my opinion... the one of the Lights Out Boxset...

The reason why Serve the Servants and Scentless Apprentice are NOT the two greatest songs of the entire punk era... is because they're not in the punk genre. Nirvana was considered "Grunge" as they say. Damn good songs though.

They were the first band to bring grunge to the mainstream, not to mention all underground music at the time (along with REM). It is safe to assume that if Nirvana didn't release Nevermind, most of the 90's great music never would have become popular. They were kind of just looked at as the spokesmen for the grunge movement, but there are a few others who get about as much credit as them (Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden).

I'm not even going to argue! I think I wore the In Utero cassette tape out! Those songs are classics to me. I like Soundgarden, but classics? NO way, not like Nirvana, or those 1st 2 songs off of that album!
Take care!

i love the song 'serve the servants' :) i don't really pay attention to labels for music. it's either you like the band or you don't. i like all of nirvana's work, but i love the album 'bleach' more than 'in utero'. all music fans have an opinion, and you're just voicing yours. it's not wrong or right :)
