I agree with Alex. Microsoft Security Essentials is completely free, gives real-time protection against viruses AND spyware. It installs quickly, is light on system resources, and a quick scan takes about 3 minutes. It needs no registration, though you must be running a genuine (not pirated) copy of Windows. Reviews suggest it has a very good detection rate. You will not get any higher degree of protection by spending money on a "pay for" antivirus program. Get it from the Microsoft site.

I just fought off an infection of some malware that crippled my copy of Vipre. I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials and it found and killed everything that wasn't supposed to be there.

I'm not sure if it's the best, but it was very effective, very easy to use, removed the malware once and for all (I'd delete the file only to have it come back the next reboot.

I use a combination of apps to protect my PC .

Here is the combination that I use

Avast antivirus > Malwarebytes > Super Antispyware > Comodo Firewall .

As Far as avast is concerned , u need to register for free , give them ur email address and they will send u a free licence key for avast (i.e. for 1 year ) and u are entitled to use the software for 1 year !

I would have to say, i've been using AVG anti-virus for quite awhile now, and it have yet to fail me, or impede me on my gaming(which requires raw processing power). I still use the free version(they still provide updates), but you can purchase the full version, which has more comprehensive protection.
