Microsoft Excel 4.0 work on XP?

Does Microsoft Excel 4.0 work on XP?

Does XL 4.0 (competitive) Upgrade check for something installed on your PC before it will install?

Can you tell from outside the package if XL 4.0 upgrade is 4.0c (for example, if it has 3.5" disks?)

How do you start the utility to layout the dialog boxes in XL 4.0? Do any other versions have this utility?

Thanks for any knowledgeable responses!

I've got a copy of MS Excel 4.0 that's been transfered through 3 or 4 different computers as I've upgraded to newer and faster computers. I've still got the original disks somewhere in storage, but I've never needed to reinstall Excel 4.0. I've just copied the necessary folders to the new computer and added the shortcuts I've needed to the desktop and Start menu. The only thing that needs to be installed from disk is the Q+E program, which I've never used.

My copy is Excel 4.0 (not 4.0c). It runs without any problems on my computer with Windows XP SP3 (and also ran under XP SP2).

The dialog editor is a program named Excelde.exe. I've never used dialog boxes in any version of Excel, but it looks like they are built into Excel 97.

I can't answer any of your questions about the competitive upgrade for Excel 4.0. As I remember it, software from that era was usually pretty clearly marked as to what disk size they had inside.

[The copyright on Excel 4.0 is 1985-1992. For a 17 year old program, I still like it because it's not as slow and bloated as the newer versions of Excel, although the non-standard shortcut keys can be frustrating at times.]
