Washing wool and cashmere?

I have a long coat made of wool and cashmere, is it safe to wash it on gentle cycle in cold water with mild detergent?

No, it is not "safe" to do so. There will be a risk of shrinkage, color loss, lining damage, etc. I said a "risk"....

I would follow the washing instructions on the tag. If the tag is missing, to be safe I would hand-wash it in warm water with a mild detergent like woolite and lay flat to dry (so it won't loose it's shape)

use Woolite detergent and follow the instructions.

Better to hand wash in a big tub though and towel dry, then lay it out on a open rack to dry.

Better yet, take it to a dry cleaners and let them do the hard work
