What do I do after I buy my first car?
Here's the story, I live in California, and bought a car at Arizona, well
my sister did, so she bought it for me.
She's going to drive it down to California and I figured that it would be safe
if I got insurance for the car so she can drive it down here
with nothing to worry about.
So I go to the insurance company and they said I can't get it
unless I have registration paper ? Or the Pay to something bill.
Is this true ? I remember my sister not having to show anything,
she did it over the phone...

There are only three ways you can handle this.
First, have your sister mail you the title already
signed over to you. Then you can get the insurance
needed to have coverage. She can drive it with
her existing plates, and most likely not have a
problem. Or you can mail her a copy of the
proof of insurance, and after getting the DMV
to issue plates, or a temporary vehicle permit,
mail that as well. You would have to ue the
post office to post office express mail to get
it back and forth overnight, but it would work.
Another way is for her to get a temporary
drive away insurance to drive it up to you.
Most insurance companies can provide a
temporary, liability only, drive away insurance
for such things, but you would need to provide
a description of the vehicle, and the VIN
number. The title number, and issuing state
wouldn't hurt either. She could even get
this and a temporary drive away license
for the vehicle to drive it to you. The temp
drive away licenses are usually only good
for about a week, but are issued by state
DMV's.
Finally, she could just use the title to get
insurance on the car as hers, then cancel
it when she got back home.
With any of these you will have an extra
expense for the mail, or the insurance
just to get it to you. However, these are
the only legal ways. The temporary
insurance method would be best if her
state issues what is called a Temporary
Drive Away license. This is used by many
to transport vehicles purchased in one
state to drive back home to another state,
or when moving to another state before
the vehicle is licensed, and registered.
She just has to find out what is available
there.

in some states you can do it over the phone but in CA you need the registration or prof of purchase
when you get the insurance DRIVE IT and have a good time

Your sister apparently had existing insurance on another vehicle, and simply added the "new" one to her policy to take it to California. She'll have to sign the title over to you; then you get your own insurance, take the title to the DMV, and register it.
