you can cover it with polythene~this will also warm the soil up earlier in the sping. You can even plant directly through it to keep weeds down and help the plants get a better start.

    hope this helps

I am not sure what area your garden is located in but most weeds do not give off seed in the winter. Most weeds give off their seeds during the summer and fall months. I am afraid you will be very disappointed next spring if you think covering the soil in the winter will save you weeding work. The seed is already in the soil for next years garden season.

I lot of people use a black plastic covering to cover the soil, so weed won't grow. This cloth can be reused if you are careful to fold or roll it up. They suggest to leave it down all year, and cut holes where you want to put in a plant, I rather do it the old fashioned way. I have use the newspaper to do the same thing. My dad used to spade down and over 8" this also mixed in the fertilizer, I don't remember weeds growing at all in the vegetable garden, I have also seen weed come up through the black material.

Source(s): I don't know where to purchase it or how much it cost. Perhaps check out a mail order place called Charley's I have used gravel, it helped a little but not that much to warrent the price of the rocks, and the work to lift them and put them down. Now I have trouble digging into that space to plant or remove the weeds, try it and see if it works for you

Damp newspaper and straw mulch of some sort it you want it to look more presentable. It's cheaper than black plastic sheeting and can be left there in spring, just cut slits through the paper to plant and it will keep weeds down through spring as well.

You can use polythene to keep your soil warm and kill off weeds. Something like the guide attached.
