Does anyone have any idea why music is so dominated by males?

I cannot think of a single classical composer that was female. Men dominated that time and place. Women were taught to sing and occasionally to play instruments. Women were not composers.

But, even in the twentieth century, men have dominated musical composition, from John Williams to Paul McCartney, from Hank Williams to Elton John, from Niel Diamond to Eminem.

There are a lot of female performers, many of them incredibly talented, but I can think of very few who actually composed significant music.

Any ideas?

Because males dominate most businesses. Women are working toward equality in the work place, but haven't made it yet.

If they were equal in high profile work, like the music industry, or acting/ directing, or politics, there would be a surge in woman's rights, as it would cause the discrepancies in the gender treatment /rules, to be taken seriously.

peter: Of course she would have obstacles. Composing music doesn't get it made or played. You have to convince others to fund the work, to play the work, and everything in between. You also have to sell the finished work, to get it heard. Women are turned down quickly because they are not taken seriously in the business. Some women use male pen names, and get a man to be her "face" so her work will even be considered. It's a sad fact that being a woman means having the door slammed in your face, in many businesses. Men are given more leeway, because men are viewed as real business people.

Google search Diane Warren. She's written so many hits its ridiculous.

I'm sure people will give some answer that has to do with sexism but who really knows? What difference does it make anyway?

Any woman that wants to compose in today's world would have no obstacles.

I dont think its because there are more talented men than women. I do think its because Men are more confident about their talents.

Many artists had to hit rock bottom, no job, focus strictly on the music, be homeless, work horrible jobs, etc. Most women will not drop every aspect of their life to focus on something that seems farfetched. Men are a little more willing to do so.
