I answered a question about the Nobel Peace Prize, but this is a question that must be asked?

How does someone who has done apparently nothing win the prize? I applaud Pres Obama for having a seemingly sincere desire to bring peace between the Israelis and the Muslims, better relations with the Russians even work with the Chinese (though at the expense of the Dalai Lama and Tibet!); but the peace prize, I believe, is about accomplishing peace initiatives throughout the world, not your good intentions to do so. Obama has not been in office long enough to bring about any real change. More and more I see the bias toward liberals that the conservatives keep squawking about. Maybe they have a point in there somewhere....I welcome any pro or con responses to my opinion.

Update:

Nehru, thanks for the answer. I would have emailed you personally but you don't allow email. Maybe not proud but I do like Obama very much as a president, but the fact remains, he has done nothing to win this honor. Think about Doctors Without Borders who were discovering planted bombs that were killing and maiming civilians a few years ago. They are the people who should win the Nobel Peace Prize; I'm sorry, but not, liberal presidents who have yet to prove themselves.

Update 2:

Hi Just Me. Thanks for the input. I could not email you personally or I would have done so. Maybe I like Carter and Gore a bit more than you. And I'm pulling for Obama. I want him to be a successful president, I just don't want the award handed to him. I want him to earn it, and your phrase, not "enough to win a cookie" is apt and funny. I'm sorry but I definitely think politics is pushing its ugly head into something that should be non-political. Keep the comments coming!

Update 3:

Rlvjav, thanks for the answer. Not sure I totally agree with you about Gore and esp Carter, and I don't know that Frank or Emmanuel are ever going to win a Nobel Peace Prize, but your (satirical?) point is well made. The prize is not about giving someone who has done good work in the world. It's about POLITICS, and who happens to be in power at the moment. I don't know much about the history of the Peace Prize but I have to say I'm a little ashamed of the process where a media-saturated popular President wins because of his announcements about his good intentions, and as far as I can tell, nothing more. Everybody, THANKS FOR THE GREAT RESPONSES. AT LEAST WE'RE ALL THINKING!!

I absolutely agree with your question!! The guy is full of good intentions but so far accomplished NOTHING to win this prize (he has not done anything, not even to win a cookie) - It is a shame and it just shows how low the committee that chooses nominees for the Nobel got this time - I thought that after Gore and Carter they couldn't dig any deeper to demoralize themselves but it looks like they found a way to do it...

Al Gore won because of his movie

Jimmy Carter won (white flag of surrender)

    Yasser Arafat won

Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini were nominated.

And now, Obama wins? Why? What has he done? Is it for being popular and likable in Europe? Is it because he's Liberal? Was is because they hate Bush so much? Was it to influence his decision to send more troops to Afghanistan?

The Nobel Peace Prize tarnishes the reputation of all the other Nobel Prizes, and often makes the Norwegians, Swedes, and Danish look like imbeciles.

I am just wondering who his opponents, if that is the right term, for the prize were. This has not been a year with a lot of peace. Sure, no big war between Israel and the Arabs has broken out, yet, there is no shooting war at the moment between India and Pakistan and North Korea has not bombed us, despite some apparent threats. But I don't know who else was up for one, nobody just jumps out as a frontrunner.

Obama won the prize simply because of politics. The Nobel Prize has deteriorated into an opportunity for the folks who make the choices for the prize to interject their opinions into U.S. politics. And it works. Look at all the positive opinion generated for Al Gore and his global warming hoax after he won in 2007. And then Jimmy Carter gets tapped in 2002? (I think it was) and immediately becomes a rejuvenated ambassador for socialism representing the U.S. in rogue nations worldwide.

Based upon these winners we can expect Al Franken, Barney Frank, Rahm Emmanuel ..... etc. to be lauded in coming years.

Unfortunately you are not on the panel of judges to select the Peace Prize. Nevertheless, you should be proud of your President!
