Wings chun and power (effectiveness)?
ok so here is the deal. i am looking for a martial arts form that is more of a self defense than for show in the ring. im not taking away from the guys in mma i love watching that stuff however, i am looking for something that will server me well in a true fight if something happened on the streets.
i was a Corpsman assigned to the marines and did 3 combat deployments. i earned several belts in the MCMAP and would like to continue with a martial arts that will allow me to defend myself.
i have had people say judo is good but i know from experience the last place you want to be is on the ground especially with several attackers. even if you win in that scenario you will have broken bones etc...
i came accross this guy Tony Massengill. this kung fu looks like it would be highly affective especially at close range. i have never had a real fight at long range with an attacker.
my thing is that i have seen some videos of people doing this art and they are very fast at what they do. one video on youtube called something like "wing chun fast hands" was impressive to watch but with that speed the guy had no power. if he hit me like that is a real fight i would laugh.
so what i am wondering is, is this martial arts style affective in real life. i would like to know from people who may have had to use it or know of someone who has. im talking about real life here not some fight in the cage were throat strikes are no allowed; im talking real life were you walk away or you dont.
no i am not looking to get into a fight with random people but you never know what can happen. i have used my MCMAP as a civilian, long story. i would just like to improve on this training.
any advice or feedback would be nice.

first of all there are no such things as closed range or long ranged styles. you can only fight the guy(s) from within your reach. you can't hit a guy who is far away from you. i hate when people choose this term to emphasize their styles.
About wingchun(g), vingtsun all the same, this is a very effective martial art style to learn. it is simple and straight forward and most of all very scientific, unlike other styles with many complicated techniques. learn it well and you know how effective it is. I believe there is one ufc guy from s. america uses this style and he knocks out sylva and another guy recently that i forgot his name. he knocks his opponent in the first round. he sure uses it.

Wing Chun is an effective and efficient style of Kung Fu. U have to remember that MAs are only as effective as the martial artist using it. Wing Chun schools that dont teach the internal aspects should be avoided since without its internal aspects its an incomplete system. Finding a good instructor is more to study under is more important than finding a particular style to study.
Good luck

Yeah they are extremely fast and when they are sparring they hit hard I've sparred with them before and they are good at what they do. I take Kung Fu Shaolin and Hungar. I prefer that because it's more rounded, it has more power, and it was meant for war so you can take on multiple people in a very short amount of time. If i were you i would take Kung Fu it is more practical. If you need to look at someone famous Bruce Lee's first martial art was wing chun but he never finished and he was more famous for his Kung Fu. Hope this helped you.

wing chun is a close in fighting style. and thats pretty much all it is. it contains alot of trapping, a few low kicks, and alot of straight punches (vertical fist) ...its based on protecting your centerline, while exposing your opponents. ie...you want to be facing him, while he's not facing you...thus he cannot attack you. there is very little grappling or throwing in wing chun however...your mcmap training should round this out pretty well.
mcmap, and macp (modern army combatives) ...are really mma with a 'combat' emphasis anyway. you would do well to look into a reality based system such as, krav maga, senshido, tony blauers spear syste, hochheim's scientific fighting congress, vee arnis jitsu if you're near nyc. etc etc....or some jeet kune do/jun fan gung fu if it's available.
you already know what you want out of training....the next step is to see whats available in your area, and visit each school and take free classes and ask lots of questions, and base your decision on that.
if you want streetfighting, study something that has streetfighting as its emphasis. for self defense it's important to study something that has self defense (not fighting) as its main focus.
hope that helps

Wing Chun can be pretty good. But the other answerers already said what there is needed to say. Heres another martial art you can use just for self defense. Hapkido is extremely useful and deadly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hapkido

if you punch to the stomach or the other parts that can be strenghtened than yes you WILL laugh at him....but this is where weak spots like the temple and throat and eyes and joints kick in...those fast punches will deal with those areas. and people think wing chun punches are weak ask your friend to punch you in your stomach as hard as he can...and make your own opponion.....so far I didn't have to use my wing tsun but something tells me its okay this way......wing tsun/chun has everything in it ground fighting stand up game kicing range punching eblow knee body range...so you don't have to mix it
