Regarding an open mind when it comes to politics?

Ok, so I consider myself an Independent Conservative. Now before anyone attacks me with their torches, I do try to keep an open mind about situations. A family member of mine tells me that politically, an open mind is another word for someone who's undecided. Does anyone agree with this? Why or why not?

I don't believe it means that you are necessarily undecided. I am a liberal, but I listen and consider anything that anyone tells me. I think that having an open mind just rounds out your opinions so that you can further argue your case more effectively.

A open mind is needed when looking into politics because nobody has all the answers, politics is not black & white most of the worlds problems are more complicated than most people think.

As humans beings, as we grow was we take on more ideas and have more experiences in life, our ideas and views change. I think this is healthy an normal.

Also don't like the idea of being label, the idea that you're conservative or labour etc I'm neither, it doesn't matter who's in power at the moment, they are only puppets anyway, answerable to their masters.

We all know that they all promise to solve all the problems when they get in power, then when they get in, they don't anything they promised.

It's imperative to not only have an open mind, but to always verify any ones statement. No two reality's are alike. Ignorance is bliss. Opinions are like azzholes and everyone has one. Never get sucked into the "party" thing. Don't disrespect the other view as yours may change with life experiences. Remember we're just attending earth school. Study hard

The start of wisdom is the words "I don't know". So stay wise, even after making decisions, like voting. Till then try and stick to facts in your discourse. Its the only-opinion people who make politics so crazy.

But on a related tip, never hand your opinion out in a poll. To them always be undecided. Because if you are on their side, they will take you for granted, and if you are on the other side they will ignore you. Its the "undecided" that they circle over like vultures, and they often then start making special offers to buy your vote. foiling polls will also make it harder for "wet finger" politicians to follow the wind of opinion and challenge the leaders that instead follow the principle of liberty.

The pollsters job is not to help you but to manage you as a resource.

No, I don't agree. I actually think that admitting to being open to new possibilities & information is a good & honest position. All of our political opinions change with age and as we acquire new information. My grandpa used to say "if you're open minded your brains will fall out" lol. BUT even my grandfather has changed his opinions on a number of topics ranging from county/local tax to religion and will admit that opinions can only change when you're open to new ideas and information.... and that we are all the wiser for it. Complete closed mindedness means your stagnant in your pursuit of competing information and (a little bit) arrogant.

Since then my grandfather has amdended his slogan: "Don't be so open minded that your brains fall out."

    It's a balance.

Well philosophically speaking and scientifically speaking their is no definite answer to something. Someone should always have an open mind to facts. That is irrelevant to whether or not your conservative or liberal. And I mean, our constitution is set in stone but yet then again it can be changed so I think America is one of the most open minded countries around.

it's always better to have an open mind, but this does not mean one is undecided. Your "family member" simply has a closed mind, and ambrose bierce once said "a closed mind is an enigma. Whereas nothing ever enters, strange things are forever coming out".

An open mind is necessary in life, politics included.

That undecided line is just another way to label someone to fit someone else's agenda.

An open mind just means that you're willing to give serious consideration to others' opinions. The sign of an open mind is that you sometimes change an opinion. Somebody who NEVER changes his mind is in an intellectual rut.

Family member is wrong... but really, who can really keep an "open mind" in the world of politics???
