ipod Touch microphone?

I have an iPod Touch 8GB, model PB58LL. I am trying to figure out if I buy a microphone to plug into it, will it work? Everywhere I look to buy one says I need a second generation iPod Touch and I can't figure out if mine is or not. I've put the serial number in at the website and looked through everything and can't figure out what version it is. Can anyone help me?

    If you ipod touch has a volume switch on the left side then it is the second gen touch.
