Why are there so few NFL players from New York?

I only know one present day football player that is from New York and it is Ray Rice (New Rochelle). I'm sure that there are some more from upstate but can someone explain this to me?

Update:

Ryan Grant is from Suffern

    That's a little like asking why there are no Professional Hockey players from California.

    It's small and just not a hot bed for recruitment;

    and a lot of times, college players identify more with the town they live in to go to school and will report such prior to combines.

    It's not just New York, its the whole the northeast, except New Jersey.

    It's probably because of all the liberals.

    Who knows the actual reason.

    New Jersey has a fair amount of recruits, but besides that no state north of Pennsylvania really has much football recruiting.

    Also, Vinny Testaverde is from Long Island and Michael Hart is from Syracuse.

    The entire Northeast is not a hotspot for pro recruiting. Entrance scores and grades are high, as are the graduation rates. People seeking the NFL may have a tough time of it there.
