My 8 yr old stutters. Does this mean he is retarded?

Also, it seems to me that stuttering is like a record skipping. If I just lightly slap him in the back of the head, he skips forward and the stuttering stops. This really works. However, I'm concerned people will think its mean to do this. He doesn't seem to mind, but then again he may be retarded.

Update:

I'm sorry I'm not as sophistacated as you MA807, I meant to say mentally retarded. You happy now?

My daughter is a speech therapist and works with children with speech problems all day. You should call your doctor and ask if he can recommend one. Do you have any other reason to think he might have mental problems? Such as learning disabilities or anything else? Also another piece of advice...I wouldn't 'slap' him on the head anymore either. He probably thinks he"s doing something wrong, when this is something he can't help. Good luck.

You should never slap ( lightly or otherwise) a child on the back of the head...bad habit and yes, people will think you're being mean to him.

What stuttering means is; his mind works faster than he can get the words out. Just don't make a big deal of it and ignore him when he does. Or, just make him think before he speaks...sort of a way to get the brain to slow down a bit before speaking...

My daughter is 3 years old and goes through stages of stuttering as they just have to much to say at once especially when they are advanced with talking! One day my daughter will be fine then the next she will stutter then nothing for weeks/months, it is perfectly normal.

My 8 yr old daughter stutters a little bit. She is not retarded, just has a speech problem. She goes to speech everyday at school to try and help her not to do that. When she stutters at home I tell her to slow down and start again. She does it really bad when she gets going really fast or gets excited. Just be there for your son and let him know that it is fine that he stutters and try to help him help himself.

Source(s): My daughter does the same thing

No he just simply has speech problems. See if your school has a speech therapist and see if he can have speech sessions 2-3 times a week. He will slowly learn not to stutter when he talks.

Source(s): Had speech therapy in grade school because I had trouble pronouncing certain words such as "Chased" and "Lamp" (trouble with the "L" sound and the "CH" sound etc) and also at times will talk to fast you cannot understand what I am saying.

ok a lot of people stutter. mentally retarded would mean that he was physically incapable of learning certain things. he may grow out of it (i did) but you might want to put him with a speech therepist (they probably have one at school)

He needs a speech therapist. That doesn't mean he is mentally challenged. And maybe you should quit slapping him. I'm sure that's not helping things.
