Don't give up quite yet! You can try a couple things. I would definately check her for a UTI. Especially if you have noticed she smells at all (kinda smells like rotten tuna fish) or strains when she potties.

Crate training is the best way to train your dog! You are missing a key piece though. You train her to let you know she needs to go potty by doing the following:

Hang a bell suspended by a rope from your doorknob. It needs to be low enough she can touch it with her nose. Before you take her outside tell her in a very happy voice, "Let's go outside!" and with a treat in your hand guide her to hit the bell with her nose. Eventually she will begin ringing it herself and you can treat her for that. Then you can take it down and she will bark. Also, make sure you are taking her out on a leash!

My Shih-Tzu went via whatever together with his hair at approximately the equal age. He raveled very convenient, while I brushed him his hair got here out. I could not brush him adequate to preserve the knots our. Would brush him three or four occasions an afternoon someday. I took him to the groomer she gave him a dog reduce. This was once simpler to handle. Long tale quick, I believe this is a difference in coat. It will final a couple of months and he/she will probably be excellent. Mine is 15 mo. now and has his new coat. I'm in view that letting him develop again to complete coat once more. Good good fortune. It is a tough time. I believe Shih-Tzu's are distinct pets. I have two. And have followed the third (we will be able to carry him dwelling quickly) Hope this is helping. PS: After going via that mine did not desire to be combed. He grew to be slightly competitive approximately combing. My breeder advocated the "UNTANGLER COMB" I ordered one off of the Internet. I believe it is the great factor feel peanut butter. He likes to be combed once more. My existence is simpler with the brand new comb.

She doesn't tell you when she has to go because you didn't teach her that. Try the bell thing. That works really well. Do you only let her out of her crate to go potty? Because that's not good either. Don't give up on her just because you don't know what to do. Search for house training tips, there are tons of really good sites out there, that's how I learned to house train my dog.

You should get her a trainer. That way, you will learn new tricks and ways to teach her things. And it may be that you have to try a new way, like litterbox or pad training. Small dogs can be notoriously difficult to housebreak. Maybe giving her a way to go in the house that does not soil the carpet will work.
