sky broadband problems?

hi all, i got sky about 6 months ago and got the max broadband option which is supposed to give up to 10mb download speeds, however the best i have ever got from it is 0.33mb.

has anybody else had this problem and do you think this is grounds for complaining and telling them that i want it cheaper?

Update:

speedtest.net is the speed tester i used to discover i was only recieving 0.33mb

The speed is limited by the base BT line that is used to get the net to your home. I live in an area where the best possible is 0.25mb through the phone line so fortunately chose to have Virgin cable and get a consistant 20 meg 24/7. I would go for that option if possible and talk to Sky about early cancellation due to this.

If you cannot get cable discuss it with Sky and tell them you want to drop to a lower speed tarrif and charge - that i am sure they would se as reasonable.

There is a possibility that the line to your house from the nearest distribution point, particularly if it is overhead, could be old and need replacing ot the connections remaking - this happened to me once.

I am on Sky and have never had a problem with the speed. I have, however had a problem with the speedtests. I have done three or four different tests one after the other and not one were the same or remotely near one another on either up or download speeds. So I don't have a lot of faith in them.

Are you sure that it is not your computer that is the problem? Mine seemed very slow the other week so I did some scans and cleanups, and as they did not cure the problem I did a reformat and now my computer is like greased lightning. This could be your problem.

    Hope this helped.

Have a look on here there may be an answer to your problem. But first copy this into your browser http://192.168.0.1/start.htm and input "admin" as the user and "sky" as the password, without the quotes, then click OK. Go to the diagnostics tab on the left and at the bottom it says "Reboot the router", click "reboot". the router will switch off then back on again, then so another speedtest.net check. Make sure the location is as close to you as possible, I use Maidenhead bbut there may be somewhere nearer you.

Also be aware that it gives two results, download and upload. 0.33mb is normal for upload.

All ADSL broadband come with that *up to 8 Mb/s or what ever, because no speed can be guaranteed.

However your probably find that the fault is with BT. It's their telephone network and their exchanges and equipment. There is no other system to use!

Sky like the rest of them only rent it from BT. So your complaint in reality is with BT.

You should complain if your speed test is accurate and you are only getting 0.33mbps. But Sky is well known for sitting on their hands and doing naught. It will cost you even to complain because you will be left hanging on for hours on a 0870 number. You have our sympathy, but some would say you should have known better than to go with Sky.

Just tell them to sort it out and use this Speed tester for proof of speed. BT line is used by Sky. http://www.speedtest.net/
