What does report(ing) out mean?

I got an assignment from work to plan on reporting out on a 10-minute presentation of what you have learned blah blah blah.

I had never heard the term "reporting out" until used in this instance. I looked it up and it has to do with legislative actions, from what I can tell.

Is my employer just making stuff up or am I missing something. We also had to come up with stump speeches in the past, to post up on walls. This was to make people think about something whenever they read them. When I looked up the definition of a stump speech, it has to do with political campaigning back in the olden days.

You're right. "Reporting out" doesn't make sense, except in the military where soldiers must report out when going on leave or leaving a base. Was your instructor recently in the military?

"Stump speeches," on the other hand, was used thousands of times during the past election cycle when speaking of the presidential and other candidates when they were out giving speeches to various crowds. Sometimes well-known news anchors said things like, "The two candidates were out on the stump again today."

Your employer seems to have a thing for colorful phrases. It would be nice if they were meaningful. I thought you meant "signing out" as when leaving the building. Doesn't he just mean "give" a 10 minute presentation?
