Are these sentences correct or not?

Hi, I am not a native English speaker.

My question is are these sentences correct or not.

If correct, which sentence is the most common way to say?

If incorrect, how to say correctly?

Thanks

Thanks so much for your condolence on my father's death.

Thanks so much for your condolence on the death of my father.

Using the word condolences in the letter is a bit difficult and awkward. It doesn't really say anything or express your gratitude for their condolences anyway. How about something like this instead:

    Dear __________,

Thank you so much for sending me a card when my father died. It means a lot that you were thinking of me at such a sad time. Your heartfelt condolences were very much appreciated.

    Sincerely,

    _________

You can change the word card, to letter, or note, or flowers depending on what they sent you. Just keep it simple.

Technically they are both correct, but they sound a bit awkward. The second sentence is definitely less awkward, but being a native English speaker, I would say:

Thank you so much for your condolences regarding the death of my father.

Or just make "Condolences" plural because it doesn't make sense for it to be singular.

    Hope this helped!!!

And I'm sorry to hear about your father :(

You need an 'S' on the end of condolence, and then both sentences will be correct. Personally, I think #2 sounds a bit more formal and therefore appropriate for the situation.

Most of these answers are a stirring-up of the waters for no reason: THE PERSON WHO SENT YOU CONDOLENCES ALREADY KNOWS WHY HE DID IT. Actually, it's rather insulting to be reminded of why you expressed a supposedly heartfelt emotion, isn't it? It implies insincerity on your part, a mere going-through-the-motions, doesn't it? And "so"is not an all-purpose intensifier; one asks "so that WHAT?"

I have taught writing for 40 years, and simple and direct is always best, Plus, it gives you the chance to include some REAL feelings instead:

Thank you for your condolences. __________ (not just the generic "my father") would have been pleased that you remembered him.

In other words, cut out the meaningless garbage and you will have the room and the time to be a grateful human being.

I'm not an english major but I think the second sentence sounds much better. I would say "Thank you for your condolence on the death of my father."

    Generally you'd say:

    "Thank you for your condolences."

If you really want to include the father part, you would say:

"Thank you for your condolences for the death of my father."

However, it's pretty obvious which condolences you're thanking the person for, so you would usually leave the "for the death of my father" part out.

    How about,

"I would like to thank you for extending your condolences on the death of my father."

Thank you very much for your condolences on the death of my father

...I think both the first and second sentence starting with, "Thanks so much..." is wrong, especially concerning the death of your father.

  • Technically, as most have stated, they are both correct, though I never understood why it us referred to in the plural sense if only a singular condolence.

It should be , "thank you so much for you condolences on my fathers death" .
