Don't you think Facebook is ridiculous?

I mean, come on, do people really have to socialize in such an artificial way? Pretty soon we'll see two people texting each other when they're sitting right beside one another!!! What happened to pleasant conversations or calling someone up?

Update:

Some good answers. But, come on, saying I'm ridiculous??? I'm much superior to those who would say such a thing. Even worse, if you said it to my face...

If you use it for that kind of socializing, it is ridiculous! But let's say you have 25 family members, and nobody used to send mail or call, but everyone is likely to go online. Well, you can post family pictures that they can share and print, and group announcements, instead of sending out 25 letters, and links to good articles they were in or sometimes recipes for all the diabetics in the family. THEN, if someone wants to chat with you, they call you up and walla- Facebook put to constructive use.

I use Facebook just like that- to keep in touch with what used to be a distant and shy family. Now we're getting to know each other once again, so when we do decide to call, it'll be much easier than just to call out of the blue and hope you have something in common and something to say.

In other words, things like Facebook and MySpace give shy people a way to edit what we have to say before we say it, which makes it easier to talk.

So no- Like anything else in the world, Facebook isn't any more ridiculous than the way you choose to use it.

My wife Linda (51) is a professional actress (Law and Order SVU, Starved) and uses Facebook for professional networking; as most people genuinely in the entertainment industry prefer Facebook to MySpace.

However, Linda prefers MySpace (over Facebook) for fun.

I agree that some teens use Facebook in a rather trivial manner
