Vasectomy vs Tubes Tied?
I saw a question on here earlier about people wanting or not wanting to have more kids. A lot of women were saying that they their husbands got a vasectomy as opposed to them getting their tubes tied. Is there a medical reason for that? I just always thought it made more sense to get your tubes tied while the doctor was already down there. Plus your SO doesn't mind getting a vasectomy? I don't know if my husband would go for a vasectomy.
I did have a C-Section 6 1/2 months ago when my daughter was born due to complications.

A vasectomy is a safer surgery than a tubal. It also doesn't cost as much and the recovery time is much faster. It does make sense to go ahead and get your tubes tied after the delivery of your last child if that's what you want to do. But personally for me I would rather not make that decision while I am hormonal after giving birth. Plus everyone who I know that had their tubes tied after childbirth said that the recovery was harder than just recovering from childbirth. And I don't understand why should it be any harder for your husband to get a vasectomy than it would be for you to have your tubes tied? It doesn't affect his ability to orgasm or the quantity of his semen. It just makes sure that there is no sperm in the semen. The way I look at it, I spent years taking birth control pills containing hormones and then I delivered two children naturally without an epidural. Why should I have to go through a surgery as well? I think he owes me one.

Getting your tubes tied is more expensive and attempts to reverse it are normally not successful and they're not covered by insurance. Plus it's not 1000% accurate. A ectopic pregnancy is possible, tho not common.
I always thought of it this way; today you may feel as if you don't want any more children, but what about 3 years from now? What if, you lose a child? Or your child needs a donor? Or your marriage breaks up and your new SO desperately wants a child.
All those are unthinkable, I know, but they do happen. Why do something so permanent.
BTW, vasectomy's are done on an outpatient basis. 1-2-3. lol But, they do take up to 6 weeks to work.
After having only one child and wanting more...and after watching my neice go thru the horrors of infertility and now adoption, I guess I'm against anything so permanent. But, it's not up to us; it's up to each couple to decide what is best for them.
Edit: getting your tubes tied is NOT easily reveresed and if it is reversed, it only works a small percentage of the time. Plus it's $$ and NOT covered by insurance.

The vasectomy is a much simpler and less invasive operation. To tie your tubes the surgeon has to get inside your abdomenal cavity either with traditional surgery or a laprascope. Either way, there are risks of complications inherent with entering the body space that way. For a man it's next to nothing by comparison. A small incision is made in the scrotum, the vas deferens is cut, and both ends are tied off. A stitch or two to close the scrotum, and it's all over. Recovery time is much faster as well. I think a man who would insist his wife have her tubes tied rather than him getting a vasectomy is purely selfish and does not deserve her physical favor.

1. A vasectomy is "dirt cheap" (The cost is only about $1000 if paying cash).
2. A vasectomy in most cases leaves no scar.
3. Recovery time for a vasectomy is about 2-6 days.
4. A vasectomy is super simple.
5. A vasectomy is verifiable (semen analysis).

Vasectomy is an out patient surgery, cheaper, and does not have as long of a recovery time. It's also (I believe I've read!) more effective and has less of a chance of reversing than getting your tubes tied. So unless you know you are getting a c-section and you know you don't want any more kids, it just seems easier and more cost effective for the man to get the vasectomy. My husband is all for getting it done. We have discussed it at length. I just have to get my butt in gear and call the doctor to set it up. For some reason he just does not call and make appointments for himself ever. :-P

Cause it is alot easier for a man to get it done than a women..getting your tubes tied is a major surgery..and if the women goes through so much to give birth than the man could at least get the vasectomy...
My hubby and I are not sure what we want to do yet when we decide that we want no more children..I told my husband that I will not get my tubes tied and he said he would get the vasectomy but we still aren't sure yet..we might just use other precautions..but we want at least one more child so I have a little longer to decide what we are going to do..

Personally, I choose none of the above.
Just becasue a vasectomy is a less invasive procedure does not mean it is a safer choice. A dear friend of our family had severe complication from his vasectomy, even after taking extreme care and following orders to a T (he's a doctor himself).
If you take the surgery part out of it, vasectomy is definitely more detrimental to a man's health than tubal ligation is for a woman, it's just very rarely talked about. Check out http://www.dontfixit.org/ for more information.
ETA:
I am kind of stumped that so many women are comparing child birth to vasectomy. Child birth is a natural precess our bodies were designed for, while vasectomy is mechanically altering the natural process of a man's body. Apples and oranges.

Me and my husband had this talk last night. With all women have to go through, men should offer to get the vasectomy. and unless you have a section, the doctor is not "down there". For a woman this is a big surgery that could put you out of commission for a couple of weeks. For a man the recovery time is a couple of days. My brother in law went to work the next day and said he was fine.

Getting your tubes tied is a major surgery, where as a vasectomy is done with local anaesthetics. Some women who have c-sections ask the Dr. to tie their tubes right after they take the baby out as suppose to having a separate surgery for that.

It depends on the person. If you don't mind getting your tubes tied, do it. You can get your tubal ligation reversed, should you remarried and/ or want kids again. A Vasectomy is much harder to undo, nearly impossible. If you do not want to get your tubes tied but want no more children, ask yourself why your husband does not want to do HIS part in not wanting to bring more children into the world! YOU went through nine months of pregnancy. YOU went through the pain of delivery. YOU probably spent the most time carrying for the child/ren. If your husband is afraid it is going to "hurt to much" Have him speak to the Dr or others that have had it. Personally, after all we mother go through to bring a child into this world, it is the LEAST the husband or SO can do!
