Okay, so there is a possum in my outside garbage can, now what?

He doesn't appear to be one of those critters that is just going to be friendly enough to allow us to just reach in there and pull him out, there is too much garbage to just dump him out and tomorrow is garbage day. He and our cats are buddies so we don't want to him to end up in the county landfill.

Ahhh! that's so sweet. I use to have a pet possum when I was growing up, (did I mention that my family was very poor).

To answer your question. Take one of your pork chops or streak out of the fridge and fry it up and then place it on a plate away from the garage, when he sneaks out to eat it, simple shut the door or fix the hole in which he is gaining entry. Poor little guy is going to be so upset that you fed him then locked him out.

Are you sure he cannot get out on his own? You may just have to tip it over to allow him to crawl out and then replace the trash. If you have wildlife around your property you really need to keep you garbage cans with locking lids on them. This way you will not be attracting wildlife and you will not have to deal with situations like this one.

They are night creatures and pretty capable of most anything.. Just make sure the lid is open. He will be gone when the sun goes up. They don't like the sun!

might want to tilt the garbage can over, i dont think he will attack you or anything unless he is rabid - probably want to do it before morning, they can feak out in daylight i think since they are nocturnal - like just talk to him first before you attempt to calm him down a tad, then tilt it slowly away from you and i don't think he'll freak out
