How long should a first date last?
OK, so I am meeting this guy for coffee at 5:30 as a low pressure date thing. I think what's implied is that we'll do dinner if things go well. He originally asked me out for a "bite to eat" and I suggested coffee...
I have a party I want to go to afterwards, and I'm wondering how long this thing should last. There shouldn't be any bar hopping- like coffee, and maybe dinner (?).
So, if it goes well, how long should this date last? If it doesn't go well, how long should it last? I like him, so I'm hoping it'll go well.
Oh, I didn't plan this. I forgot about the party, and I can't really take him along cause it's a small thing. So I'm trying to do both.... I don't want to cancel on him. He seems so perfect for me.

That's up to you...it can last say 30 mins if there is no connection and you're both trying to be polite and not dash away...to several hours. I had a first date with a guy a couple of months ago to meet for a cocktail (kind of like what you're doing) and it turned into over 7 hrs with dinner included.
If it goes well, you decide when you're ready to wind things up. Might you invite him to attend the party with you if it goes really well or would that be inappropriate in this instance?
Nobody can give you a set time...you know your schedule for the evening so you make the call based on how good of a time you are both having. Make it last as long as possible or if ya just don't click have your coffee, thank him for his time, let him know you two aren't a good match, and wrap things up.
I hope it goes well though...it's always fun after a good first date to go home and think about him and anticipate seeing him again in the future.
Good luck!

If it goes well invite him with you to the party. If it goes badly you can just say you have to go to a party and then you choose how long it will take. A tip to you, never put a date into your time schedule. You cant put time on love

Why don't you just ask your date to go to the party with you?
Call him and see if he can grab dinner regardless and then if he would like to go?
You have nothing to lose and you won't be pressed for time.
