for game hunting, legal or not... you would find a 40 pound weapons system to be pretty hard to bear on moving game. I hope your spotter doesn't make a lot of noise either... tends to spook game. A 50 cal "sniper" rifle is used against materiel 8 of 10 shots....it's ideal for shooting light vehicles, semi-fixed positions...you see, when using a Barrett one would take advantage of the oppositions "predictabilty'... you find the enemy, set up and wait for a shot. Elk and deer have patterns... but can be awfully unpredictable. Most hunters work pretty hard to get a "lucky shot". I am not sure which 50 cal Browning machine gun round we would use on Elk... at less than a mile, that would not either pass right through the beast- or totally ruin the carcass. Wounding any deer or elk - and giving it a 1/2 mile head start just about insures you wont successfully track it in the terrain they are found in. Yep...you know this is crazy- cause it is.

That thing weighs almost 40 pounds. If you are that brawny, you might as well chase the deer down and beat to death.
A hunter is someone who goes looking for the animal, by the time you lug that chunk of metal around, you are going to be too tired to shoot accurately with the rifle.
If you are going to be one of those who sit and wait for a deer to wander within a half mile of you, then you are not hunting. Sell the gun and go buy a freezer of cow meat.

it's a bit overkill, the largest I'd take would be a 338 lapua magnum and with that I'd still stay a minimum of 600 yards from the target to allow lost in velocity, a deer isn't a elk, they can often be a tenth of the weight of these bigger animals, a .50 BMG bullet would tear such a large hole that it would be useless to keep the meat and the body would be ruined for a trophy, I see no advantage of using anything above a .30 caliber rifle like the .308 winchester or the 30-06 springfield.

um....no. A .50 will completely blow up anything solid (like when it hits bone) or go straight through it. When bullets go straight through, they don't mushroom and cause damage to the vitals over a broad range. Better off to stick with nothing bigger than about .35 (depending on the cartridge)

No. it is way too powerful, way too heavy, way too expensive, and it is kind of a dangerous round to be hunting with as it will penetrate a lot before it will stop. BTW what gave you this idea?

yeah, at 1000 meters! best for helicopter hunting, so you can get to your meat before it rots (15 minutes)
