How important is the car in F1?
Compared to the driver? The obvious example of how important the car is is Button, who spent 07 and 08 in terrible cars and got terrible results, but went on to win this years championship.
However, we also have Alonso and Rosberg, who scored 26 and 34.5 points respectively, compared to their team-mates 0. And we have Raikkonen, who won the Belgian Grand Prix whilst his team-mate qualified and finished last.
How much of a difference can the driver make?

It depends on how much competition there is. If there are 4 top class cars in a season then the drivers would make all the difference. If there was only 1 great car then the car would be the difference.
In reality, id say driver/car work on a 40/60 ratio.

The car has been nearly everything to everyone this year, especially Button, good work on him for winning it, but it was mostly down to his car, i mean look where he was 06 (besides Hungary) 07 and 08, pretty much no where to be seen, but after a bit of money from Branson was put in, the car was developed and that was what he needed to perform.
But i also agree with 007James. In other seasons if there is more than one competitor for the title, it will obviously be down to how well the driver can compete and how good a driver he is.

007James is right i think it depends on how close the cars are performance wise, i mean if you look at Honda's 2007 and 2008 cars they were really diabolical, no matter how fantastic a driver you were you weren't gonna get them cars very far up the grid in normal racing conditions so in that sense the car was more important than the driver. But then if we look at today's race, Lewis should have been faster than Vettel, he had KERS and the slightly faster car, Yet vettel manged to catch him and overtake him because the performance difference wasnt as great and( in my opinion at least) Vettel is an outstanding driver so in this case the driver was more important. Right now all the cars are so close that i think the driver can make a big difference.

It depends on how competitive the other cars are. If 1 team builds a great car, but the others don't, then that team will dominate. Look back at 2002 when Schumacher dominated F1. I think most of us would agree that he was a great driver, but you also need to consider that the other teams didn't build cars that were fast enough to have their drivers compete with him.
