  • What poems that represent British culture?

    Hi,

I'm looking for some poems that represent British history or culture that a foreign student of good (but by no means fluent) English skills would appreciate.

So far I've only come up with Flanders Fields. Any other recommendations would be appreciated! (The poems can be about anything: love, war, family, nature etc.)

  • Department of Mysteries questions in Harry Potter?

    1) The whole point of Voldemort brainwashing Harry to think that Sirius was trapped in the Department was for Harry to pick up the prophecy. But once Harry got there and found that Sirius was absent there was no reason for him to then pick up the prophecy. It was by pure chance that they noticed the prophecy had Harry's name on. Isn't that a bit of a ridiculous plan by Voldemort?

    2) The other thing I don't understand is why Voldemort then SHOWS UP at the ministry to fight Dumbledore. Why? The whole point of his crazy plan is that he can't appear because the ministry don't believe he's back, but then he appears anyway!

    3) Why is there a copy of the prophecy in the ministry anyway? The only person that knows what the prophecy says is Dumbledore, and he knows that it's top secret information. So why would he make a copy of it where Voldemort could read it!? Unless of course all prophecies magically appear in the room once made, but if that's the case it shouldn't have Harry's name on it (as it's not clear at the time who the prophecy is about).

    4) Why does Dumbledore tell Harry what's in the prophecy at the end of the book when Voldemort can potentially manipulate/read his mind?

  • When was the last time 4 different drivers in 4 different cars won the first 4 races?

Has it ever happened before? Has 5 ever happened?

F1 is so close this year! Sauber and Lotus could potentially have won as well.

PS: I'm obviously talking about the last time not including this year.

  • Is milk that you add to cereal eaten or drunk?

Obviously the cereal is eaten, but does the fact that the milk is liquid mean that it's drank, or 'eaten' as part of a meal?

  • Who will win the 2011 F1 championship?

Let's have none of this 'it's too early to tell' stuff. I just want to get a sample of who's favourite in your books. Alonso? Vettel? Hamilton? Button? Webber? Perhaps even Schumacher, Rosberg or Kubica?

    What do you think?

Also, same question but for the constructors championship. :)

Or should all wheels roll at the same rate (assuming the same friction?)

  • Why are F1 drivers so greedy?

Surely it makes little difference if you earn £5 million or £10 million, either is a stupidly large amount of money. Isn't it more important to have a competitive car, win races and be remembered for years to come?

Raikkonen snubbed a McLaren offer and Button has jumped ship at Brawn/Mercedes largely because of money. (I know there are other issues, but money was a major factor in both cases.)

  • How important is the car in F1?

Compared to the driver? The obvious example of how important the car is is Button, who spent 07 and 08 in terrible cars and got terrible results, but went on to win this years championship.

However, we also have Alonso and Rosberg, who scored 26 and 34.5 points respectively, compared to their team-mates 0. And we have Raikkonen, who won the Belgian Grand Prix whilst his team-mate qualified and finished last.

How much of a difference can the driver make?

  • So, in consecutive years we've had a British world champion.?

Who beat a Brazilian to the crown, by finishing 5th in Brazil. And strangest of all, both had car number 22.

    Spooky or what?

  • I'm going to Leeds Fest, what sandwhiches should I take?

Cheese goes greasy when stuffed in a bag, so that's out. What do you think? Jam? Peanut Butter? Ham?

  • So, Michael vs Kimi, opinions?

Lot's of people have been saying that we now get to see Schumacher vs Hamilton, but really Raikkonen is the only one we'll be able to make a direct comparison with.

Who will come out on top? Will Schumacher be able to handle not being the undisputed no1 driver (when was the last time Schumacher had such a good team-mate, if ever?).

    Your opinions please.

  • Why haven't Brawn been able to find a title sponser?

I know we're in a recession and all that, but you'd think that in 4 months the team that's been leading both championships from the beginning would be able to find someone.

Are they asking for too much dough?

  • What does Bernie think of his medals system now?

Surely even he must admit to its stupidity now Button has won 6 of the first 7 races. Yes, Button will probably end up champion either way, but at least this way the fight continues into the second half of the year.

  • What the hell has happened to Toyota?

They locked out the front row in Bahrain, but didn't make it out of Q1 in Monaco? Will they recover? Have they lost their best opportunity for heir first win? Could the same huge drop happen to Red Bull or Brawn?

  • Do people care about nationality in F1?

I lot of Hamilton fans put in the fact that he's British as one of the reasons for supporting him. That's fair enough I think, but obviously F1 is quite multinational (teams made up of people from all over the place).

Are you more likely to support someone who's British? It makes no difference to me, but I was just wondering what the general opinion is.

  • I thought tyre blankets were banned?

Yet they seem to be on every tyre before a car goes out. When was this decision revised? Was it because the cars wouldn't be safe when the tyres were relatively cold?
