Which would you go by-LMP, ultrasound or fundal height?

I had two funky periods while trying to get pregnant (I'm ALWAYS consistant, except those 2 times) My Lmp was march 31 which gives a rough EDD about 1-4-10. However, at 17 weeks my fundal height measured much higher (about 5 higher) & my midwife felt I possibly could be further along. At "23" weeks my ultrasound technician felt by her calculations the due date is more like Christmas bc the baby seemed further developed + measurements. The due dates are about 10 days apart!! By using the new due date & my fundal height Christmas seems to make sense for the EDD. We are of course hoping for a December baby, but realistically-what do you think? Do you think he could be born sooner than Christmas? Any similar experiences out there? Which would you go by?

LMP is a guess and can be off by several weeks. It assumes you ovulated on day 14 of a perfectly 28 day cycle. Since most women DON'T LMP is not an accurate way to date a pregnancy at all. Ultrasound is the most effective of the 3 ways. It relies on actual developemental characteristics and sizes to determine size, but can be off as much as 2 weeks in either direction. Fundal height really is useless at determining the date in and of itself. Not everyone's uterus is going to respond the same way to being pregnant and women carry in various ways and all that will make the fundal height vary so it's not very reliable for dating a pregnancy at all. I would go by the ultrasound as my EDD but realize that it could be 2 weeks past that EDD or 2 wks BEFORE when the baby is born. The only way to know for sure when you ovulated and concieved would have been to have charted your cycles, so at this point you are going to have to go based on evidence of the ultrasound.

LMP is the least accurate. You can get pregnant at any point during your period, and a few women can even have period-like bleeding after they get pregnant. If you had an early (1st trimester) exam, the measurements taken at that time would be the most accurate due date. This is because most babies are pretty much the same size through the first trimester, so we can tell almost exactly how old they are by measuring them at this stage.

As the baby gets older, the due date will change, but that's just because babies grow at different rates in the second and third trimesters. The new measurements are not really used to change your due date, but to see if your baby is developing on time. Of course there are variations, but if the baby falls too far behind or leaps too far ahead, he will be called "small for dates" or "large for dates". The ultrasound machine automatically calculates measurements as due dates. This is just so that we know, for example, that the baby is large if it should be measuring at 21 weeks according to the first measurement, but it is actually measuring at 25 weeks. The real due date doesn't change.

Remember that babies can be born at different ages. Though most people consider 40 weeks to be the perfect time for birth (and this is how due date is calculated), the baby doesn't have a calendar and may have other ideas. A baby is considered full-term as early as 37 weeks, and can be born healthy "post date" at as late as 42 weeks (most pregnancies will be induced well before this, however).

Enjoy your new little one, whenever he decides to arrive!

17 weeks is kind of early to be relying on fundal height. The thing about ultrasounds and belly measurements is that they're not very accurate...well, if you had an U/S at 10 weeks or before, they tend to be MORE accurate, but still not so much.

Babies grow at different rates, and these helpful tools doctors have are only accurate within 2 weeks. I would stick with your original due date. If you're a first time mommy, there's a 70% chance your baby will be overdue anyway. I've always measured 2 to 4 weeks larger than normal and my doctor refuses to change my due date of 12/15. As much as I'd like him to be here sooner, I've just started looking at it like he'll be here sometime in December. Plus, I think looking at things like that will help avoid me getting frustrated and impatient if he's not here before the 15th.

    Hope this helps!

OKay, well myhubby and I were tracking my period and ovulation dates very well and we know the weekend that we got prego. So when I went to the OB and told her my Lmp she said my due date was may 28th, then at 8 weeks i was having some pain and went to the ER..they gave me an ultrasound and baby was fine...it was jusst a small cyst that i had..that went away after awhile. But they said that the baby was measuring at 6 wks and so when i went to my OB and she had reviewed the ultrasound she said that my new adjusted due date would be june 10th...I told her no way..i KNOW when I got prego and when I was ovulating. She insisted that early ultrasounds are too accurate early on and that they wouls stick to june 10th...well my water broke on may 27th..one day before me originaly due date! she was 6.8 lbs 19 in and was just fine! I was right. i would stick with your original due date, baby might just be big..but who knows..either due date your baby will be healthy. enjoy and congrats!

    take care

Ultrasound is the most accurate, because its based on the factual development of the baby. Not a guessed date, or your anatomical measurement.
