With the direction the GOP is going, will it be able to compete any longer outside the South?

Update:

No, its true that VA and NJ voted in GOP candidates. Not shocking either way... VA is a Southern state, and NJ has the highest concentration of wealth in the country, and pretty much alternates between a Democrat and Republican every voting cycle.

The premise for my question is the 23rd Congressional District in upstate NY, where the GOP had chosen a moderate candidate to run for a seat they have held for 120 years, and then Palin, Limbaugh and Glen all blasted her for not being conservative enough, and then endorsed a carpet bagging ultra-conservative. When the GOP candidate withdrew from the race, the Democratic candidate walked away with it. My point is that in the North East, there are Republicans, but they are turned off by the ultra-conservative and religious lean of the party.

Update 2:

I mean how can Limbaugh say that a moderate has no values? That is clearly an endorsement for extremist views.

Update 3:

To clarify: When I say " the direction the GOP is going" I mean further and further to the right, and I mean a party whose mouthpieces are extremists like Palin, Limbaugh and Glen.

That's a very interesting question, considering last's nights election with the New York District 23. Its always been a GOP stronghold; and then Palin step in to boot the GOP's Representative who later sided with the Democrat candidate. The split between the Republican and Conservative, provided able victory for the Democrat candidate.

The GOP is struggling to find a direction. And none of the possible directions have anything to do with the south.

Given their major wins last night.. the direction the GOP is going looks pretty good.
