Do passengers have to pay for taxi accidents in Thailand?

Could someone please clarify whether it is the responsiblity of the passengers if a taxi they were traveling gets involved in an accident?

"If by chance the driver has an accident, no matter how small, leave the fare on the seat and walk away. By Thai law you are responsible for the accident. It sounds crazy, but it's their country. Their theory is as follows: The driver wouldn't have been there if you had not hired him, so the accident is your fault.. Don't fight the system, just go with the flow."

Update:

Khun Bob,

I didn't intend to crack a joke. I intend to travel in Thailand and wanted to make sure I know local rules and customs.

I know that similar customs exist in Arabic countries where if a foreigner is involved in an motor accident with a local, it is almost always the foreigner's fault on the basis that if the foreigner was not present at that location at that time, the motor accident would not have happened.

I think several people have misunderstood Khun Bob as he was just "making light of the situation" (having a friendly laugh at the question not at the person asking the question).

The person with the identity ***** (short for monSTAR)should be very careful with your derogatory and personal comments about Khun Bob.

I have read a lot of Khun Bob's yahoo answers and I have found them to be very informative, supportive of other people's answers and yes, even quite humorous in a nice way.

    To answer your question, NO.

Don't forget to learn some basic Thai Language before you go to Thailand as you appear to be very mindful of the Thai Custom as you have stated in your coments above.

Most importantly, go there and enjoy yourself and just accept things the way they are!

Another option might be staying in Thailand, and getting a job; above or under the counter to start. As you know, you can get a room for 3000 baht or so, or share. And subsist on 6000 if you really had to, especially if you have any Thai or farang friends in the country. I think most of the major cities have ex-pat clubs, as well, and someone there might be able to help you. I KNOW they have an expat network in Pattaya and I'm sure BKK also has one. Otherwise, if you go back to the States, were you ever a member of a church there? If so, contact them, and they might be able to help you, and give you more consideration than just showing up at their front door, or a shelter.

I heard that same rumor while living in Turkey. Maybe it's a scam used by taxi drivers on gullible tourist.

Think about it, if that were true and a taxi driver had a run down car he's been using everyday for 5-10 years, he wants a replacement but dosen't want to spend the money, all he would have to do is wait for a sucker then run into a tree, presto-chango better car at the hands of a customer.

ha ha - you provoked a bit of a firestorm - I was in a taxi that was rear ended on the hwy - we had to wait for a while - I gave him a little bit of a better tip because I felt sorry for him - but no mention of me paying when the police came etc -

been in lots of taxis in bkk and never had a problem other than the rare crazy stuff - had same thing w/a meter rigged to go too fast, but that is 1x in 12 years - you will be fine, most likely - enjoy.

Funny, but no. Unless you have fallen to a new scam... Thai law does not state the passenger is in any way responsible for an accident.

I have been visiting Thailand for years and this is the 1st time I have ever heard of such a thing. My Thai business contacts laughed and said, "there is a sucker born every day..."

Khun Bob is a sarcastic ****

To answer your question... I Have been in 1 Accident in a Taxi and basically i just paid him and walked out of the car...

I was with a friend also that was driving and he hit the back of a Taxi driver... I also walked out of the car (lived down the street) and let my friend handle it.. (lol)

As far as Taxi's Just use the Meter and also i remember once there was this taxi i took (Only happened once) ... where he was using the meter but i noticed that the amount was going super high super quick for example I take this same taxi route everyday so i know its about 70 baht

but for some reason the meter was like 4 times higher and i was like WHOA i believe he was pressing some type of button secretly.. .I know this might sound funny but i am not joking..

I told him to **** off and wrote his information down.. then i reported him ..

Just be on top of your game !

Sharia law does not currently apply in Thailand. But the scoffers don't understand how insidious the spread of Islam sharia is. There are areas in France that are run by Sharia law because they have driven out the legitimate authority.

Yes, if by any chance the passenger drives or pokes the driver in the eyes..I think one eye is ok, don't poke him two eyes. BTW, the ear wouldn't count.
