Why do Americans (US) .....?

say "I could care less"? I am used to saying "I COULDN'T care less i.e. my caring for this particular thing is as low as it could go - I couldn't care any less if I tried.

The way it appears to me that US folks say it is, they COULD care less,so there is still room to go before they just couldn't care about it.

Nit picking, but I find it interesting. Is it just through common usage without thinking about what the words mean?

Interested in your thoughts. Thanks.

you're right, they're wrong. At least, they're not really saying what they think they're saying.

But is it really an American thing only?

I think it's meant more as a sarcastic, rhetorical question than as a statement. Put that way it does make a bit of sense. If that's not so, than it would dumbfounded me, because it would be nonsensical.
