Computer help please.?
I'm having problems playing videos, films etc. that I've downloaded. When I click on the file I get an error message saying "this file does not have a programme associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the control panel".
I can't find this in the control panel and I don't know what it means. Please help.

Depending on which media player you would prefer to use, you can either do something like ,
open Windows Media Player,
click on "Tools" menu, then "Options", "File Types",
and check the box corresponding with the file type of the video.
or (my preferred option)
Right-click on the video file and select "Properties",
where it says "Open with: Unknown application", click on the "Change" button,
scroll down to your preferred media player and
click "OK" (or "Other" if it's not in the list).
If an AVI file still won't play then you need to install DivX codecs which can be found free online. FLV files will run on the newer versions of RealPlayer but not on anything more than a couple of years old.
There's a program called VLC Media Player that seems to play almost anything, should all else fail.

You don't have video program which reads the video file format you have. Check the video file properties, find out its format (it would be avi or mpeg or another), google it and it will show you the available options. Find the supportive player to play that file.

Most programs will automaticly set their file extensions in the registry, so chances are if it doesn't have an association for the file extension you don't have the right program yet.
In windows XP, do the following to see file extensions
http://www.wikihow.com/Disable-Hidden-File-Extensi...
In vista follow the following to see file extensions:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/S...
now the tail end of a filename after the last period is the extension e.g.
"Really Cool Video.mov"
the extension on that file is .mov (notice the period in front of mov)
Google the file extension for the file you're trying to play and you should be able to quickly find the program or a program that can play it.
Good Luck!

Sounds like a codec issue - the best thing to do is download VLC media player - just drag and drop the file onto VLC's programme window - free here

In the controlpanel : "hardware and sound" then "cd and other media" .
you can mark it on "ask me everytime" so that next time you put in a cd he will show you a popupwindow in which you choose to open it with like: windows media player or movieplayer of others.
