What about my church's Freedom of Religion?

Same-sex marriage opponents always argue from their religious perspective and claim that if same-sex couples are allowed to legally marry (given a civil marriage certificate), that their churches would be forced to perform those marriages. Yet I do not know any gay/lesbian couples that seek to be married in churches that bar them, nor do I know any that attend churches that exclude them. Instead I know plenty that are members of churches that welcome them, are open and affirming, and who would gladly perform the marriage ceremony for them...and indeed already do (though the ceremony is performed, the government still does not legally recognize the union).

So why is it okay to pass amendments to State's constitutions enshrining your religious beliefs about the issue and deny the freedom of religion of my church and other churches like my church that are welcoming of gays and lesbians and perform the spiritual marriage ceremony for them? Why does your church's beliefs get to become law while denying my church's freedom of religion as guaranteed in the First Amendment of the US Constitution?

Update:

My church practices Radical Hospitality. It is not being "politically correct". To explain Radical Hospitality I'll simply use what is said at the church: "We come together at this table remembering that this is not a gay or straight table, a white or black table, a Christian or a Jew table, a man or a woman table. It is Jesus's table. All whom Jesus brings to this table is welcome and all who come to this table much show hospitality to each other because it is not our table, it is Jesus's table. We are not to judge each other, whom Jesus invites to come sit at the table is up to him. We must simply show hospitality to all and each other at Jesus's table."

Nobody's saying that churches will be forced to marry gays, or in any way stop discriminating against them. So don't worry, you can keep on hating.

What we ARE saying is that the government has no right to deny equal rights to any of its citizens. It's the same as preventing minorities and women from voting, or cross-racial marriage.

Gabriel: First of all your church is giving in to others to be politically correct. Secondly the bible gives us Gods word, and no one including your so called pastor, or church head has a right to change Gods law. Thirdly religion is man made, God is God and his son Jesus was a person Son of God, and son of Man, not a religion as you assume. Whom was a teacher for his father, whom came to show us the way his Father would have us go, and teachings His Father would have us follow.Fourth man erected a church as a temple to worship God. Not as a religion again that man has made. Fifthly our body is the Temple. Sixth why do you have a right to take our freedoms away by asking us to change something that we have no right to , nor do you because of your sexual preferences. Marriage is between a man nd a woman, where do you see anything different in the bible. Please show me i am wrong. Otherwise your freedom is the same as ours in a choice of whom you marry, and that is determined by God not man. Have a great day! Hope this helps clearify things. Good Luck Steve

Your question is an amalgam of several related issues. First of all the Bible itself foretells that Churches will fade away from the truth of the Bible in the End Times. Just like your church.

As for Law, I and other Christians have the right to force our beliefs onto you and anyone else to the extent of our right to vote as we please. Dont fret though as this is becoming a non Christian nation very fast and you and others can use your vote as you please and soon will have full rights for gays. This is the process. I dont have a problem with the process. And soon, when things are in your favor you will embrace the process as well.

    2 Timothy 4:3

For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

If you read most of the bills it has clauses that state that any church that doesn't want to participate they don't have to.
