Should there be a comma here?

"He was also given money and a health examination was required."

Should there be a comma before "and"?

I originally thought so because there are two independent clauses (2 subjects and 2 verbs), but now I'm not sure because of the word "also." If you separate them into sentences, is "He was also given money" a sentence?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, put a comma before "and". I'll give two reasons for saying that.

    1. It tells the reader that there are two "actions", or "ideas", in the sentence. The comma thus makes it impossible to run the first part into the second part. No-one could read the sentence as "He was also given money and a health examination".

    2. A comma at that point tells the reader where to take a breath.

With regard to your question about "He was also given money" being a sentence: yes, it is a sentence, but, "also" tells the reader that something else happened to "him" before "he" was given money. If that something has been explained, that's fine, but, if not, then "He was also given money" is an unclear sentence, and is not helpful to the reader.

I don't think it is necessary. Although I think it would help if you gave a little more of what comes before and after the sentence. Sometimes these things depend on the context.

Nice to know that someone out there still pays attention to grammar!

I don't think a comma is neccesary because like you said, also is there and it joins the two IDs smoothly and fluently, just leave it like it is.

no the only time you can is if there is a list behind it but that is still optional. so no you dont have to
