Why aren't average global temperatures rising dramatically with higher CO2 levels?
The only constant in climate is change, and recent sea surface changes have been anything but dramatic. Over the past 2,000 years the earth has been both warmer and cooler than today, and sometimes these changes have occurred quickly.
We also know that 1998 was the warmest recent year and that average temperatures have been cooling since then. However, the atmospheric CO2 levels have risen during that time which indicates the alarmist-argued relationship between CO2 and climate isn't valid.
Dana...embarassed about what? The Saragaso is used as a proxy for sea surface water temperatures because of its ideal conditions.
Dana, GISS data is questionable, and zealot blogospheres don't prove anything. I'm not caught here, check this out
pegminer, the past ten years have not been the warmest. Check link I left for Dana.

I have the long lost answer. Its taken minutes to figure out. I'm going to revolutionize science as we know it. The reason the temperature has been mild is because..... brace yourself..... Global Warming is......
A PILE OF POLITICAL BASED CRAP!!!! Yes, yes. I should of been the one to get the nobel peace prize. I figured it out. Genus, pure genius. Okay, in all seriousness there is no real proof that Global Warming is real. We're just going through our regular hot and cold cycles. Yes, you can rest in peace now. You can start breathing again (cause you know that breathing releases Co2).
I agree with you 100%. Good job on the research.

They are.
http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs/Fig.A2.lr...
You claim that "Over the past 2,000 years the earth has been both warmer and cooler than today", and then you cite a study of the Sargasso Sea. Last time I checked, the Earth is a little bigger than the Sargasso Sea. In fact, the Sargasso Sea is only 0.7% of the Earth's surface.

Your claim that 1998 is the hottest year on record is also false. NASA and NOAA have the hottest year as 2005. And your claim that the planet has been cooling since 1998 is also, shockingly, false.

Then you finish your error-riddled "question" by claiming if the global temperature hasn't risen in lock step with CO2 the past 11 years, there is no relationship between CO2 and climate. According to this logic, since global temperatures rose 0.5°C from 1975-Present, during which time solar activity didn't increase at all, there is no relationship between the Sun and the global climate.

If I were you, I'd feel really, really embarrassed right now.
*edit* "The Saragaso is used as a proxy for sea surface water temperatures because of its ideal conditions."
Another statement you should be embarrassed about making. No small area is an accurate representation of the temperature of the oceans as a whole, let alone the planet as a whole.
And ideal conditions? What ideal conditions? Be honest, you got caught with your pants down and now you're just trying to cover it up with a bunch of nonsensical statements.

Because the effect of CO2 has been drastically overstated in the doomsday scenarios. Man is NOT causing global warming.
Here is a good paper that presents good evidence on the topic

About the Sargasso sea, the point of this is to see temperater variations over time. It IS a valid source. (see the attached paper for details.)

Could it be that it is really the sun that decides how warm or cool the planets that orbit around it get. We had high solar output from about 1700 to 2000 except for a cooling burp in 1815 and the world warmed up almost as much as it die during the medieval warm period. Now the sun has gone into one of those pesky unexplained shutdowns and suddenly the world is cooling off again. Is not real science so much better than liberal make believe science where nothing ever matches their philosophical predictions. Real science is so much more satisfying to study because you observe what happens, document the results and then report on them. So much more satisfying than making wild predictions that are almost always exactly opposite to what really happens. Just consider how disappointed the liberals must be that when they were predicting the worlds oceans would boil over from excess heat in 30 years that we are really going to have a new ice age in only 10 or so. Being a liberal thinker must really be a very frustrating profession, I am so happy to be a moderate conservative that only reports on what really happens.

not to be rude.. but have you or anyone else that will read this think about what the world has been doing since the last ice age?? the world has been getting warmer.. the earths temp. will cycle and continue to do so.. maybe humans contribute to the effects of the warming.. but the earth will continue to get warmer with or without us.. you would think that the human race would see this and adjust instead of trying to fight something that cannot be changed..who knows maybe overall man has prolonged the global warming effect that we are seeing now.. or have we increased it??

Water vapors (increment as a result of ice melting from Antarctic & Arctic) somehow affect the average global temperatures even if CO2 levels are higher. More water vapors & clouds stay in regions that have agriculture & forest plantations which tend distort temperatures and trick the people. And less or none at all in regions that are arid, i.e., absence of plants & trees, because their intense heat does not attract water vapors and allow clouds to enter or pass through.

Because there is a 11 year solar cycle
http://www.theoildrum.com/uploads/12/global_temper...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Solar-cycle-data...
Notice anything on these graphs? If you go back 2 to 3 cycles at the same point, it's warmer. And goes waaaay further than that.
- pegminerLv 71 decade ago
There will always be statistical variation, but the last ten years are the warmest on record. What do you want, a new record every year?

Dana keeps throwing those dates out when as always he wrong, heres the top 10.1034,1998,1921,2006,1931,1999,1953,1990,1938,1939,now what does this mean. A.. GW is going to kill everything on this planet and Mars..B...Algore is an idiot that's only in it for the money and power..C....we're all gonna burn to a crisp because of co2...D... Algore isn't an idiot,he's really god and Nobama is the Messiah...answer is B..

"Your claim that 1998 is the hottest year on record is also false."
No. Not false. You can't accept two metrics, while ignoring the rest, and claim that 1998 was not the hottest year on record. It doesn't work that way. Besides, NOAA uses the same data as NASA, but isn't nearly as rigorous as NASA in their UHI corrections.
