Can I use an unlocked iPhone on any network?

I recently bought an iPhone and joined the AT&T network. As much as I loved the iPhone, I had to give it back to get away from AT&T: Their customer service was horrible (rude, misinforming, and trying to say my bill was $800 when it turned out -- after appealing to half a dozen managers -- that it was under $100).

So, what happens if I buy an "unlocked" iPhone? Can I just take it into my nearest Verizon Wireless store (my new cell-phone carrier) and tell them to activate it on their network?

Other than the voided Apple warranty, are their any other problems I'll be facing?

No because Verizon wireless uses the CDMA network. And iPhones only work for GSM networks.

The iphone does not work on verizon, at all unlocked or not. an unlocked iphone would only work with other carriers that have simcards meaning they use a gsm network.

Verizon uses CDMA and the network is literally not compatible with the iphone.

An unlocked iPhone cannot be used with either Verizon or Sprint. It can be used with T-Mobile and some regional GSM carriers.

T-Mobile does not support 3g for the iPhone so it's rather slow. Visual voicemail is also not supported.
