is it normal for a dog to eat a cat?

my gf's dog faught with a cat or something and ...she says it ate it. it's a pretty big dog too. so, is this normal or what?

Update:

okay. I'll be specific. Her dog used to belong to some family that moved away and couldn't take it with them. Apparently, the dog is tame since it doesn't bite her, me, my sister or anyone else; in fact its rather friendly.

She was not walking the dog. The dog was outside in the front lawn that is fenced. She usually keeps it in the back, but decided to play with it in the front yard (the front yard has more space to). Then, a cat just jumped in and the dog ripped it to shreds. She said it ate it, like ate ate.

We dont think this dog is feral or anything, its been with people since a puppy.

thank you all for the previously submitted responses, but now that u know the details. any other responses?

    Kill it?

Yeah, thats normal....Ive had any number of dogs over the years who would kill a strange cat if it came onto my property.

It has nothing to do with socializing....the dogs have a strong prey drive, and they view a cat as prey.

Eat it? Thats odd. Ive never known a dog to eat a cat. Rabbits, gophers, sure, but not a cat.

Not weird but horrible you're ALLOWING him to. Dogs and cats are entirely different species with very different nutritional needs. Dog food has way too little protein and too much fat for cats. It also lacks Taurine that without a cat can go BLIND. It's also even worth that grocery store cat foods with even less meat and MORE corn. So stop letting your cat eat the dog's food. Put the cat in another room while the dog is being fed and don't leave the food out. And feed your cat a quality CAT food made with real meat and grain free. Your cat should also getting a bit of canned food daily as well.

for an un-socialized type dog, that is big, that looks at a lot of things like food then yea mostly normal

but if it's a big calm inside type dog

or a dog that sees cats all the time then no

also if it's not familiar with cats it may have killed it and buried it or taken it somewhere like the so called "presents" you dog or cat will leave on the porch "4 u"

i say it could go either way normal or not normal but it depends

Your girlfriend smokes some good stuff.

Her dog didn't eat a cat.

How would the dog even have the opportunity?? Doesn't she walk it on a leash or supervise it when it's outside? I don't understand how anyone's dog could do that when it's supposed to be supervised.

That behaviour is hardly "normal". That is an untrained dog with an irresponsible owner.

Actually my aunt owned a dog that ate my cousins bunny when it got out of the bunny cage. She wasn't even a big dog, Lab, Shar Pei cross. So I would say it's fully possible.

    Yep, it's normal.

I know someone, whose Min Pin ate a kitten, ate everything but the head.

Yeah, I wasn't being serious, it's kind of disturbing really, some dogs have a really strong prey drive, but the person I'm referring to, did leave the dog & kitten unsupervised, so really the owner was to blame.

I don't think so, unless the dog is feral. Coyotes and foxes will eat cate, and as they come back into the cities do so on a regular basis.

normal for an untrained and unsocialized dog, yeah. Not something you should continue to let happen. Thats some ones pet

No, its not normal unless the dog is wild or not fed properly.
