5T is slightly smaller than a 5 or 5/6. 5 slims will have the length but be a lot slimmer around. Different brands fit differently for the same sizes as well. I know it's weird! I have a hard time fitting my boy for clothes - he'll be five at the beginning of Feb and weighs 32 pounds so he's a small one!

My son will also be 5 in March. He is 36lbs right now and is wearing size 4 slims. The slims help because they aren't so big and you don't need to adjust the waist on the adjustable waist jeans as tight as they can go. I sometimes just buy the regular jeans if I can't find the slims, but they always have to have the adjustable waist or they will just fall off. I wouldn't go with 5T because the toddler sizes tend to have a thicker waist for the belly fat. I always found that the toddler sizes didn't do well with a small child other than the shortness of the jeans. Toddler sizes are a bit shorter (which if your son is short like mine is good but if he is also skinny like mine then it really doesn't help). Size XS is more of a size 4-5 in boys. I buy this size in shirts for my son. As for in jeans I don't think you want that size because it means it is meant to fit a wider variety of boys. Hope I helped a bit.

5 slim would be for a kid that's tall enough to wear the size but there too skinny for the width, where when I was a little older in about second grade I think there's a thing in some clothes called a half size or in boys HUSKY it means that you need a wider size but that height, its best to psychically try it on him if possible because kids do not always wear the size there age suggests, I know a 3 year old who wears a 4 or 5 top and she still wears pull ups so she needs bigger bottoms. (Kids often can wear a size smaller below when there out of training pants not that this probably applies to you.)

Also clothes sometimes vary by brand, in kids clothes, in adult clothes, in shoes, not all brands fit the same way. I found department store or major name brands are sometimes more generous than store brand clothes you would find at like say Walmart.

All brands run differently. My son is very tall, it hard to find pants to fit him in length. I know Old Navy and the childrens place will fit him so thats where all his pants come from. If i go into department stores the pants seem to run alot smaller and shorter.

Measure his inseam and waist so when you go shopping you can use that as a guide. Try the 5t's first to see if they work out, they are in the toddler section and cost less than the big boy section.

You can also go online to the different store sites, they have size charts for length weight and waist. It is an estimation, I have found some are longer than others in the same store, same size...Old Navy is one of the stores.

5 regular is what most 5 years olds would wear, 5 slim is if he is really skinny with skinny legs.
