This is going to take a lot of work so instead of going through each and every point, I'm going to rewrite your paragraphs and let you compare the two.
The client, Irma Garcia, is seventy years old. A widow for seven years, she lives alone in her own home in a colonia on the South side of Pharr. Mrs. Garcia has no children from her 45 years of marriage. (This doesn't make sense when you read the rest of the report about how they worked together for 45 years to build a home and it's the only one with central air?? I suggest you strike the domestic violence reference unless it is important to the issue, but like I said it doesn't fit the pattern of having such a nice home.)
The client and her husband were migrant workers who always held two or three jobs. There were many years of hardship before they were able to buy a piece of property in the colonia and build their own home. Mrs. Garcia's "family" consists of the strong relationships she has built with her old and trusted friends from the colonia.
Problem Definition:
Ms. Irma came to the agency seeking help on the issue of her house being condemned by the city of Pharr. The city officials are planning to build a new school in the colonia where she lives. The city officials only gave the people of her neighborhood six months to relocate. The city of Pharr has offered Mrs. Garcia $90,000 for her house, but she has refused the offer. She has two main reasons why she does not want to move from her house. First, because it has significant sentimental value to her. Irma and her husband worked hard to be able to have the house built. She has a sense of pride because her home is the only one in the neighborhood with central air conditioning. Mrs. Garcia has a desire to live out her life in her own home. Second, Mrs. Garcia has established a strong bond with friends from the colonia and after so many years, she does not wish to lose contact with them.
During the interview process, Mrs. Garcia made it clear that she would defend her right to stay in her property. But she understands that if forced to move, she wants assistance and time to find new living arrangements. The agency decided to provide services to help with her with relocation, and will give her two months to resettle. The people in the colonia especially Mrs. Garcia's older friends will play a major factor in trying to convince the city officials to relocated their school construction. By organizing colonia meetings, Mrs. Garcia and her friends and neighbors will use these meetings discuss the issues. She plans to educate everyone about their rights to keep and defend their properties. In addition, she will educate the city officials and the community on the harmful impact that the construction of a new school in the middle of a residential area would cause. She plans to bring to the attention of the city planners the fact that since there are no public housing facilities available for older adults, they cannot expect to relocate everyone in the time frame they have planned.
Client Strengths:
At the age of seventy, Mrs. Garcia in in excellent health and has a good sense of independence and determination. She has a strong desire to succeed in her goal to preserve, not only her home, but the entire neighborhood. Plus, Mrs. Garcia has a strong support system through her friends in the colonia. She has strong leadership skills and is well-trusted by the people in the colonia.
The fact that she is seeking help from the agency shows that she is well-grounded in reality and will be a positive factor in this effort.
