Today, I strongly believe that all positions of an organization will be employed by white men without any of the affirmative action policies being exist. Imagine the University of Texas-Pan American will only have white men professors like in the 1930’s. The University of Texas-Pan American won’t be the university that we have today. One of the major transformations in the University of Texas-Pan American was between in the 1970’s to 1980’s. As stated in the university’s website, “Pan American University saw the student population diversify during the 1970’s reflecting a predominantly Mexican-American population.” I strongly believe that the major cause was the creation of affirmative action policies. Affirmative action policies improve the citizens of the Rio Grande Valley by providing hope of opportunities to obtain a higher education and degree jobs. In 1981, another major transformation occurred in the University of Texas-Pan American; Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez became the first Hispanic president of the university.

In my observation, I viewed how each member helped inform the concerns for the individuals who are considering having a weight loss surgery.
The “Beary Buddies’ weight loss support group was not created for members who had the weight loss surgery, but also for obese people who are thinking of having a weight loss surgery. The number of members in the support group was fifteen members; twelve who had the surgery and three who are considering of having a surgery. In the support group, half of the members were white, elderly people and the other half were Latinos around middle age. Also, there were only two mid-twenties adults. I observed that the support group had equally male and females members. I had the opportunity to observe that most all of the members received the weight loss surgery with the help of government and health insurance. Medicare helped the elderly people with their surgery costs.
In my observation, I viewed that confidentiality was not an important feature in the support group. Many of the members had their spouse or a family member with them as a support. Confidentiality was not discussed in the support group. However, evaluation was discussed in the support group. At the end of the session, the leader will verbally have an evaluation with the group. For example, the leader asked the group if they like the guest speakers and also they hadn’t any concerns and problems.

Being an adopted child, David has experience a unique and different early childhood than others. As a result, he may be difficulty establishing a trusting relationship with his adopted parent.

Then, I started to plan how I can overcome my issue of self-reinforcement especially in school setting. One of my goals was not let my negative thoughts overcome my mind when I get a bad grade in an exam is one example. Self-monitoring is one of the strategies that adopted to complete my goals. I prepared for the exam by reading my chapters and the PowerPoint slides. Then, I saw what type of exam it is an essay exam, I started to worry that led to sick feeling in my stomach immediately. But I relax by thinking positive and taking the exam steps by steps. After I finish my exam, I didn’t have any negative thoughts still knowing that I performed poorly in the exam. At the end of the day, I went shopping with my friends and told them about the exam. They give positive feedbacks and I felt good about myself.

I started talking with my family and friends. With this change, I was able to express my feeling and thoughts to my family and friends. One of the reasons that I am a shy person is due to my learning disability. I constantly was having thoughts about how would people viewed and treated me differently due to my learning disability. In my past experience in high school and secondary school, my peers and teachers would treat and viewed me differently due to my learning disability. Another factor that increases the frequency of self-reinforcement is having a low self-esteem. Together, my learning disability, low self-esteem, and personality led to the increase of the frequency of self-reinforcement; I started having feelings of depression and anxiety.

The frequency of self-reinforcement can affect the person’s way of living in many ways as a student, daughter, sibling, and friend. I am a student, especially as a student, I face with many issues that leads to self-reinforcement. For example, when I get a good grade in a test, I
feel great and excited that lead to a positive reinforcement. Also, the frequency of self-reinforcement can affect a person within the family and friend. According to Measures for Clinical Practice, “…serious deficits in self-reinforcement skills, dependency upon others for approval, and possible vulnerability to depression”(163). I agree with this statement that I sometimes seek and depend on my family’s approval and as well as my friends. In addition, based on study of Tsui-Feng Wu and Meifen Wei, “Studies have found that the capacity for self-reinforcement is negatively related to anxiety and depression” (). The capacity of self-reinforcement can affect a person greatly if the problem is not overcome.
