Based on an online articles, “Children with an amputation will need to work with their family members in the adjustment to a new body image” (). The lack of communication with David’s parent is one of the reasons that he has become sullen and withdrawn during his diagnosis. By using object relations theory, we, as social worker understand better on the client’s behavior. Besides having problem communicating with his parent, David is having problem adapt to his new disability. One way that object relations theory help understand David’s issues is by referring his leg as a object and his past experience using his leg refer as relations. In the object relations theory, the object is not always referring an important person, but also a part of one’s body part such a leg. By having great memories with his leg, David is having problem dealing with his loss of leg and not being able to particular in physical activities as before. By developing a good communication between David and his parent, they will overcome their issues of understanding themselves better. David’s parent will have a better understanding to care and love David better.

After reading the case of David, I focus on David’s behaviors rather than his parent. I believed that by solving David’s behaviors; it will also help the parent overcome their problems. I realized that it is a normal behavior to feel withdrawn by losing a leg. But, David automatically became sullen and withdrawn knowing his diagnosis and continues his behavior in a period time of four months. Being an adopted child, David was not able to enact on his situation in a positive and successful manner due to his early childhood experiences. Another reason that I decide that object relations theory related to David’s situation because of poor relationship with his adopted parent and the lack of communication between David and his parent.
