In spite of all, affirmative action policies have been criticized and attack from groups who believe the policies are taking away the jobs from White and men. The opposed group disagree that affirmative action has increase equality in the labor market. According to Margaret L. Andersen, “Critics of affirmative action argue that race-blind and gender-blind policies are the only fair way to proceed...” (2008, 149). They strongly believe that the affirmative action policies are not promoted equality to all citizens. However, presidents issued two executive orders of affirmative action because mostly all jobs are taken by white men. The government wanted to create an equal balance in the labor market by allowing the minorities and women to be hire in jobs filled by white men. Today, I strongly believe that all positions of an organization will be employed by white men without any of the affirmative action policies being exist. Imagine the University of Texas-Pan American will only have white men professors like in the 1930’s. The University of Texas-Pan American won’t be the university that we have today. One of the major transformations in the University of Texas-Pan American was between in the 1970’s to 1980’s. As stated in the university’s website, “Pan American University saw the student population diversify during the 1970’s reflecting a predominantly Mexican-American population.” I strongly believe that the major cause was the creation of affirmative action policies. Affirmative action policies improve the citizens of the Rio Grande Valley by providing hope of opportunities to obtain a higher education and degree jobs. In 1981, another major transformation occurred in the University of Texas-Pan American; Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez became the first Hispanic president of the university.
