Object relations theory is one of the psychodynamic theories that focus on human development and the ability to form relationships or communication with others especially primary caregivers. In the object relations theory, the term object is the significant person or things impacting the feelings of the person. Sigmund Freud became the first person to use the term “object” referring to infants. Also, the term relations refers the person’s past experiences affecting their life in the present. A person’s early childhood experience impacts one’s personality, the way one enacted with others and also establishes relationships. According to Thomas Klee, “…understand object relations from this perspective, they find that it intuitively reflects certain truths about all human relationships, from the early relationships of infancy, to friendships, to marriage, to the therapeutic relationship” (2007). With Thomas Klee’s statement, one can obtained a better understand on the clients ‘s relationships by adopt object relations theory in social work practice.
Object relations theory plays an important role in the social work practice. As social worker, we need to gather information to assist better the client’s situation by using object relations theory. A social worker will make a better understand the client’s behaviors and situation. According to Elizabeth D. Hutchison, “…if the early object relations are problematic, a person’s ability to develop trusting relationship can always be improved…” (p.154). By using object relations theory in the social work practice, a social worker will assess that their client have a trusting issue with others. The social worker will help the client overcome their trusting issue with others and become a better person. In the case of David, the use of object relation theory provides usefulness information and a better understanding of David’s issue. Being an adopted child, David has experience a unique and different early childhood than others. As a result, he may be difficulty establishing a trusting relationship with his adopted parent.
