shield that says upgrades are ready for your computer keeps popping up....?

Awhile back I clicked on this shield and had to end up getting my computer fixed I don't know what to do, do I click on it and download upgrades or just ignore it?

Update:

This is a yellow shield and it looks like a:

! or a key hole in the center.

DO NOT UPGRADE! It is probably some sort of spyware. I recently had a blue shield on my computer and when i ran the program, nothing on my computer worked, and i kept getting popups to sites that i had never been to. It was a navy blue shield with a diagonal stripe across it if that helps. If it's a shield with an M in the middle of it, then it is McAfee and probably ok to click on.

Any legitimate upgrade is properly identified.

If a pop-up tells you 'Upgrade', be wary.

Better yet, (for other than Microsoft automatic upgrades), get 'TechTracker' from Cnet.com.

It will scan your PC, if it finds any upgradeable programs, it will tell you, offer to install them and/or show you where and how to get the upgrade if you wish.
