Can fruits ferment into alcohol without yeast?

I'm experimenting with a few home brews and was just wondering if they can ferment into alcohol without yeast, or if there are any alternatives.

    Fermentation Without Yeast

Yeasts are present in the air (wild yeasts) and are found on most fruits. Yeasts are even on our skins.

But you have to be very patient to achieve fermentation this way.

Only yeasts will ferment sugar into alcohol. And since a package only costs around a buck (use yeast for home brewing not baking yeast for best results), why try any other way?

Actually, yes they can. It just takes a lot longer. Yeast is present in most foods, anything that can turn sour or secretes a gas when it rots contains yeast. Fruit has a lot of it. In the older days they didn't have the type of yeast we buy in the shop, so they just waited longer!

Unless you add some sugar and wine yeast and add an air lock, you are soon going to have a jar of rotting fruit pulp. Not nice. John H

No. It takes a living organism - yeast - to eat the sugars in the juices and excrete alcohol. Oh, you didn't know that alcohol is bacterial excreta (poop)? Surprise! That's what it is, kiddo - the excreta of the living organisms called yeast...how d'ya like drinking poop?
