What do you think of hyphenated names?

I asked a question about which name Darcy could be hyphenated with.

But now I'm doubting using hyphens at all. Do hyphenated names like Anne-Marie, Sarah-Louise, Emma-Rose work?

Or are they confusing and pointless as the children will just end up being called Anne, Sarah and Emma anyway? Should you just use an ordinary middle name?

They can work - I have a friend called Anne-Marie and that's what she's called most of the time, we don't tend to shorten it, but it has to be a name which rolls off the tongue like that - Anne-Marie could almost be Anmarie really I suppose.

Sarah-Louise is a bit of a mouthful, but Emma-Rose isn't too bad. You could go with Sarah-Jane I suppose (like the woman out of Dr Who!) or just make up your own combination.

Ultimately it will be your child who decides what they want to be called though - My friend has got a Jemimah who insists on being called 'Jem' these days - if they don't like the name, they'll be sure to let you know when they're older.

I think they look very pretty written out.

    HOWEVER

    and its a big however

We live in a computer age, and even more so, a child just now being born.

These names often have computer mix ups. I had one job that caused me to

deal with looking up people's names or imputting the name.

    Hyphenated names caused many snafu's.

Also, the name is very long including the hyphen ( which is a must)

They dont fit into most programming. Even your Anne-Marie is 10 letters w/hyphen.

Why put a child through that ? They can go by any name they chose verbally.

First names arent quite so bad as hypenated last names

    Those are horrendous.

Customers would call and say their name was Sue Smith. You couldnt find it

Then finally they say look under Sue Bergman-Smith. So then you find it under the B's

    sigh

I like how they look, but I wouldnt want my bank account lost because of a hyphen.

Personally, I'd never use a hyphenated name - I think they're pointless, because the second part of the name generally wouldn't get used. There are a few names which are more well known as hyphenated names - names like Anne-Marie or Mary-Kate are commonly used, so people tend to accept them, whereas if you just randomly hyphenate two names that you like, it doesn't work quite so well. I think that if you hyphenated Darcy with another name, your daughter would just get called Darcy. I much prefer a separate first and middle name to a hyphenated first name. :]

I personally feel like they are pointless. I mean, I think its a bit much to constantly refer to someone as two names "hey ann-marie"... its just too much. You'll most likely wind up calling her by the first part of the name. I know someone named Mary-Elizabeth and she has always gone by just Mary. You might as well just do a first and middle name. I feel like hyphenated names are so.... country or something... but not in a good way.

Awful. Just lose the hyphen and they're okay in my book.

    Anne Marie

    Sarah Louise

    Emma Rose

Although if you also have a middle name, the whole thing will get pretty long.

aww those are all cute but u shouldnt put all the hyphens that would be difficult to use when there learnin to write there name,if ur child decides to use them when she is older and she decides it is cooler than let her do it!!And a good name for darcy would be like Darcy-Lee or lynn

i think they are alright, i wouldnt actually use a hyphen though. like:

    anne marie (middle) (last)

my daughters name is Julia Ann (Last) and i call her Julia Ann all the time, almost think I should have thrown a middle name in after ann!

good luck, and remember as long as you love it, it is your baby!! :-)

    i like hyphenated names.

but most kids do just get called by the first one anyway.

    hope this helps :)

It is a bad joke and just makes it harder for the kid.

And if anything it just seems snooty.
