What are your experiences with BYBs you've met in person?

So I was driving home today, and I saw a sign in front of somebody's house:

"Pomeranian/Chihuahua(it was really a designer dog name, but I don't want to say it) pups for sale, $150 or more"

What gets me is that that person was overcharging for mutts and that I'd seen the sign in previous years. My dad and my brother were sitting with me in the car, and so I started ranting to them(I'd also have ranted to myself if nobody else was there) about BYBs and how it was ridiculous to pay that much and possibly MORE for a mutt that probably didn't have any testing done, the parents were bad, etc etc etc.

My dad just kind of nodded and agreed(I think he was listening) and my brother was totally zoned out.

This got me thinking:

Have any of you ever had any experience with a BYB face-to-face? Not like my rant? What did you say? How did they react? And etc etc.

And, if this isn't good enough question, here is a Legit or two...

What's the most dangerous thing your dog(s) has ever gotten into?

Does your dog(s) seem to favor one color over another?

Where did you get inspiration/the idea to give your dog(s) the name he has now?

All answers except for stupid ones and ones advertising your own question are welcomed.

Thanks!

    Good question!

Personally, the reason I have bags of no sleep under my eyes is because I'm all night awake dissing BYB's on Yahoo Answers. Sometimes, I feel sorry for my answers and delete them, not because I'm like, "oh, stop dissing the poor BYB" but I know this people are pratically blind in what comes to "reasons to report" so I don't want to take any risks.

I never had a direct encounter with a BYB, otherwise I would shove my foot on his nuts and kick his ***. I'd also have him\her neutered, spayed. Ah, ah.

However, I do have a girl in my school (not older than 17 years old) that is a proud Pomchi breeder. She even did a presentation about this breed, telling us how wonderful it is, etc., etc., etc. She got an A. I got so nervous I couldn't even look her in the eye, otherwise I would tear her apart!

Another one breeds Labradoodles and even gives his e-mail to the Science and Chemistry teachers if they are interested. I could never imagine my teacher has a picture of an over-rated, un-healthy, disgusting mutt in her book. I thought I was going to throw up when I saw how much she boasted about him\her...

I buy a Dog's magazine monthly, which (I thought) was informative, brilliant, with useful information and written by competent people that actually know what they are talking about. Sadly, it disapointed me heavily in the last number. There is this section where the people ask questions to an experienced vet, who I personally used to admire a lot, because of the smart and hard, but at the same time, gentle and kind, answers. However, somebody asked in this number what she should do, her yorkie was pregnant with her chihuahua.

Instead of going into a discussion about the horrid BYB she was, as I thought she would go, can you believe what the vet did?! She actually said something like: "don't worry, it's going to be OK! It's not your fault for the dog's pregnancy, you shouldn't feel guilty. And in the end, the puppies are so cute! I suggest you selling them for $$$$$ each under the name of Chorkie. This breed really does exist, and is very healthy and playful. Good luck!"

Well! If I knew that woman, what I would do to her! Sadly, we encounter BYB's every single day... Here. There. Everywhere.

    Time for the Legit:

What's the most dangerous thing your dog(s) has ever gotten into? - Jimbo the Rhodesian Ridgeback was attacked TWICE on our street. On the second time, he was mauled by an intire pack of wildly agressive and badly behaved labradors (yup, I said labrador retrievers!) and the owner wasn't even around. I was all alone and luckily did the right thing. He recovered well with a few stiches, and the dogs were brought in by the RSPCA, but I'll never forget how worried I was at the moment.

Molly the Basset Hound is a very distracted character, so, yes, she will probabily have many *adventures* through and on her life. She was nearly run over by a car when my father let the gate open, and she zig-zagged away across a cat on the other side of the road. We had to listen to the furious driver, and we diserved it.

Does your dog(s) seem to favor one colour over another? - Nope. Sorry for the disapointment!

Where did you get inspiration/the idea to give your dog(s) the name he has now? Jimbo was named after the Simpsons' favourite bully, Jimbo Jones. It seemed like a fun name, catchy and tremendously original. It was also a bit like "Jumbo" which fitted our dog - he was huge even as a puppy! As for Molly, it's a very silly name, and she's a very silly Basset Hound. Her full name is something like Molly Polly. My mother once had a GSD called Molly (I can't remember the show name) that was very obedient, bright, loyal, and won many titles. I named her after that, so tecnically, she's Molly II. And no, I don't agree in naming dogs the same name, each one is unike, but this GSD was my mom's and I hardly knew her - while Molly is totally mine!

EDIT: Ava Girl: Oh ****! That was terrible, you did well in calling her a greedy idiot. You go girl! :)

Real life experiences have been more frustrating that the ones on here simply because you either run into the ones who are so clueless you can see the real information just in one ear out the other and making a 20 ft jump over their heads OR you run into the ones who are so sure and so arrogant they are doing an ok thin you want to smack them.

You really want to confuse them start talking about genetics purpose of the breeding how they picked their sire and dam etc.

Hence why I avoid them when I can. Its like talking to people who can't standing hunting/working/show dogs and think all dogs should be pets.

I've had one dog get into rat poison by way of a mouse that had been poisoned in the neighbors house. NOT FUN

Never had one with a color preference.

My new pup's call name is the nickname of a very close friend - Beej

    Previous pets

My cocker spaniels got their names from Spike Lee and firework name that just seemed to fit her - Jade Flower.

Out Rott came with her name. Her mother was named Queen and her's was Empress.

I talk to them all the time as I work for a vet. First I find that there are two types of BYB's. The first type knows enough to make her dangerous. This is the person who probably goes to sites such as this one to get all of her misinformation. Sadly this person also spreads it freely to everyone she knows. She sees herself as an expert on everything dog but has never picked up a book (even a basic one) and read it from cover to cover. This is also the person who will not take her dog to the vet until it is so far gone that little can be done to save it. Money is always a concern so very little vet care gets done on the parents or the puppies. When you look at the accounting information you see that you have sent this person to collection or is close to it. This is also a vet shopper and owes every vet and feed store money in the area. After all you can make money raising puppies. After dealing with this type a person for awhile, you just want to get out of vet med and become a hermit.

The second person is a joy. She is very knowledgeable and caring. In fact, she could become a reputable breeder if you could get her convinced to find better breeding stock and to breed more towards a standard. She has a small health guarantee on her puppies. They are sent home fully vaccinated for their age, dewomed, socialized, and have been given a good start in life. She doesn't breed her female at every heat cycle and spays them before they get too old. If there's a problem, she will call you right away even if it's been after hours. Thankfully we see more of this type of breeder.

Yes. At an art and wine festival a couple months ago, I saw these Beagle pups. I asked the "breeder" what classification they are (ie, 13'' or 15''), and he said "mini". I almost threw up.

    Edit: Legit:

What's the most dangerous thing your dog(s) has ever gotten into?

He bolted out of the house and got hit by a car.

Does your dog(s) seem to favor one color over another?

    Nah

Where did you get inspiration/the idea to give your dog(s) the name he has now?

When we went to the shelter the first time, there was either a Yorkie or a Silky (not sure which) sitting in the corner of the kennel thing. We had wanted it, but were told that he was old and was going to be PTS. We had wanted to name is Terry, because it was a Terrier, and so when we saw my dog the next day, we decided to name him that, in honor of the old dog.

Oh boy do I have a story!

A friend of mine was looking for a female pug & someone had told him about a "breeder" in a town nearby. About halfway there I asked "how do you know where we are going" He said "Oh, I guess there is a sign out front"

I got a little skeptical but figured he meant a sign stating the kennel name.

Nope, the person had a piece of wood sitting in front of their house that said " ADORABLE BLACK FEMALE PUG PUPPIES FOR SALE!"

I tried to talk him out of it but he wanted to take a look.

It was quite the experience to say the least.

First of all, the lady was old as dirt & spoke very loudly because she couldn't hear. So she was basically screaming at us the entire time. That was awkward.

She brought us down to the area where she kept the puppies.... it was a dilapidated, disgusting little apartment room that was built under her house. She had circled some areas of the room with chicken wire to keep the puppies in one room as well as "gated" a doorway off with chair. It was not clean. There were still old dishes sitting in the kitchen area.

There were over 20 puppies running around this room. Some of them were black, some of them were not. Not all of them were female. Clearly the sign said "black female pug puppies" to attract attention because that is the a desirable color right now for people.

She had a pregnant female TIED UP inside of a baby carriage. (I'm not kidding, I wish I was)

He asked how much the puppies were. She said "negotiable. but I can't go too low because I buy the puppies from an outside source & I can't take a cut from profits"

Again, I wish I was kidding.

He asked "what about the pregnant pug? isn't she your's?" She said "Yes. She's due any day now. I have her tied up so she wont hurt herself"

I was trying really hard not to get angry. It wasn't easy.

She then began pointing out which puppies she thought were "the best". She held up a extremely runty black female & said "She's so cute because she's just so little! Better grab her up soon she'll go quick!"

The little puppy had runny eyes. A runny nose & looked miserable.

That's when I started to speak up & ask all the real questions one would want to know when talking to a breeder. She pretended not to hear me & often said "You'll have to speak up. I can't hear well" Then would quickly try to change the subject.

At one point I watched one of the puppies squeeze through the chicken wire she had up & escape down to another part of the apartment. She didn't notice. How would she? There were still 20 more puppies scurrying around that she was trying to turn a buck on.

Finally I said "one of the puppies run off" She was like "oh, that's OK. they do that. it'll come back!"

I stood up, retrieved the puppy from another room. handed it to the lady & said "I need to leave before I get physically ill. This area is dangerous & filthy. The puppies are obviously sickly & you're a greedy idiot." & walked out. My friend followed behind me.

A few months later, I went with them again to a different breeder. Yes, a good one this time! They told us that she & other Pug breeders in the state have been trying to shut that lady down for a long time but nothing has been able to be done yet.

    It's really sad.

The back yard breeder was clueless & should have neutered one of their pet Dobermanns as they were incapable of supervising them. The *oops* litter was advertised as £200.00 or best offer. The pups were not not kc registered & the sire & dam had not been health tested or proven in any way. The breeder didn't ask me why I wanted the breed, what I planned to do with the puppy & would deliver for an additional £20.00.

The puppy grew into an adult with a rock solid temperament, fantastic character & to date has not needed any veterinary care above booster vaccinations. It's pot luck when you purchase from a back yard breeder & I know I was most fortunate. A one off on my part, not to be repeated!

Rubbish bag, where there was cooked chicken carcass ~ lesson learned, now locked bins!

    No preference for color.

Tori, Victoria is one of my favorite names, Tori was feminine, short & snappy. Jacob because of his genetic inheritance, I knew he would be at the top end of the standard & muscular, so I wanted a solid name.

Well my town has their local group of BYBers. There's like 4 women and I'm suspecting they are either friends or family. Their choice to do their business? The Wal mart parking lot.

I have to go there to get grocery, etc and I've seen them out there in the dead of winter, freezing weather with puppies. I've seen them there rain and sunshine.

I was walking to a store where they were at on the parking lot and all 4 of the women had yorkies, rat terriers, shih tzus(sorry if I misspelled that) pomeranians, and other smaller breeds. Within a few months, I've seen them have designer mutts. Now, nearly a two years later, all they have IS designer mutts. About a few months ago, one of them said, "Can I interest you in a ratshire" or a " yorkiepoo". I pretended to go along, seen the pups and said " No thanks. I can get the same mix at the shelter for, um let's see, $500 dollars less? And I already have a well bred yorkie, no I don't want your purebred poorly bred ones and certainly not the mutts". And I walked off. The look on her face was priceless. They couldn't sell the rat terrier yorkie crosses. They went from 1000 to 500 to 250 to 100 to 50 to free in about 3 weeks. I doubt they even got anyone to take them. Poor pups.

They eventually bought a little one bedroom house and set up their puppy shop there. Though I still see people use the wal mart parking lot.

My yorkie hasn't gotten into anything not really. He, as a puppy, liked to chew on our table legs..it was wood..so I imagine that wasn't very good.

His name has something to do with Valentines Day. I like to use Holidays as inspirations for dog names, especially the registration names.

Very good question! I have always wanted to meet a BYB myself, but, have never had the 'pleasure.' I once did email a BYB, who bred 'comfort retrievers' and inquired why she was selling mutts for $1500, when I got my purebred Golden Retriever for $1200 from a Reputable Breeder.....and, she was just a BYB.

In her mind, she thought that she was doing the right thing. She told me it was all about Supply And Demand. People in the world want 'Comfort Retrievers' so she was going to give them what they want.

I was shocked. To me, BYB's don't really even know that they are BYB's. They see nothing wrong with what they are doing.

Legit: I like pink on my dogs, even my boy looks flattering in it :)

    Starring this question!

ADD: I once met this person at the park. My dog and her puppy were playing. She asked my what breed of dog Bella was. I said, "Golden Retriever." And she said, "Oh, mine is a Goldendoodle puppy! Isn't she beautiful! And, she won't get any bigger than what she is, and her breeder said that she won't shed as a adult." I nearly threwup.

No I have never had a close encounter with BYB in person, and I really don't think I want to wast my time on piece of **** like that.

My dog got almost electrocuted when she started chewing on cables for my laptop while I was working on it.

I don't think she has preference regarding colors, although I have a thing for red and black so a lot of her stuff is in those colors.

She came with a name already. her name is Balbinka and it comes from cartoon. Balbinka was this friendly geese, lol

We went to Mexico and got offered a stray. I love how down there there are *no* recognizable breeds in dogs. It wasn't a BYB, but I was offered a accidentally bred dog.

But the closest Ive been is seeing my cousins buy a Labradoodle. It was terrible. Plus its ugly and it sheds! I didn't see the BYB in person, though. Maybe someday I'll meet a BYB.

LEGIT: As a pup, my idiot sniffed a bee hive. He was allegric, but lived.

Leg2. My mom named him. He was either Harlee or Gilligan. She likes more normal names, and I prefer unusual.
