In Spanish, when is it appropriate to use ser vs. estar with lejos/cerca de aqui?

I thought that to specify distance "estar" should be used, however I've heard (on VocabuLearn CDs) the expressions "es lejos" and "es cerca de aqui". I'm a little confused now. If anybody could clarify this for me, I'd appreciate it.

Thank you.

    ok

Estoy lejos de ti........I'm a person. I can be far, or I can physically start walking and get closer to you. Then, estaré cerca.....

    now,

Where is Australia? Es lejos.........its a country. It can't physically move. Its permanently far from the place you are right now.

so the rule is, if you're talking about something that has the ability to move, you use Estar, because its temporary and could change. If not, its Ser.
